It’s no secret I’m a fan of these games, considering I play each annual installment and sink countless hours into multiplayer every year. However, I never would’ve thought I would continuously be each site’s “COD guy.” It seems as though most people don’t want to step up to the plate and defend Call of Duty as a whole. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that the franchise does need some defending every once in a while. From a noticeable dip in narrative strength to unnecessary gameplay changes and microtransactions throughout the years, Call of Duty has angered quite a few gamers out there. It must be noted that I am not always standing idly by and praising COD amongst its shortcomings. I save that job for Assassin’s Creed, but that’s a different article. On the contrary, I’ve been known to speak my mind when it comes to Activision’s flagship franchise, and my opinions never cease to welcome an endless dirge of bewilderment.

All this being said, I welcome you to this situation report, in which I shall take an in-depth look at the Call of Duty series in its current state. Having missed out on writing a proper review for 2019’s Modern Warfare reboot – procrastination and kidney stones are an ugly mix – I figured it would be a great excuse to analyze some of the most recent, and most prestigious, titles in the series. From the latest new installments to the latest remasters, to the ones I chose to replay for the first time in years, let us take a journey through time together and properly view this esteemed series on a larger scale than most would dare to. In no particular order, rhyme, or reason, this is Call of Duty.

Credit: Infinity Ward

I began my journey with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered on the Xbox One. Having owned this game since it was bundled with Infinite Warfare back in 2016, I’d only ever touched the multiplayer until now. While I’m a bit ashamed to admit it, my first introduction to the Modern Warfare series was Modern Warfare Reflex on the Nintendo Wii. While the control scheme was a lot different, utilizing a Wii Zapper peripheral to point a fake gun at the screen, the story still managed to take me on an emotional thrill ride. Fortunately, Modern Warfare Remastered keeps that story intact, however its place upon the pedestal of “my personal favorite Infinity Ward title” may have faltered a bit.

What must be commended throughout this entire article is Call of Duty‘s ability to establish memorable characters. While the missions themselves and the guns and the set pieces may blend into each other, the soldiers that players fight beside have gone down in history as some of the best. Modern Warfare kicks off this trend with the likes of Captain Price, Gaz, and Soap MacTavish, who will live on in later installments and even cross over into future properties like 2020’s Warzone. Their unique personalities lend a certain charm to the series’ writing, making for a Hollywood-quality narrative throughout the whole trilogy.

The first Modern Warfare is most recognizable by missions like “All Ghillied Up” and the scene in which a nuclear bomb explodes before your eyes. But the true enjoyment of this campaign – nostalgia aside – is its inclusion of more subtle action sequences, like sneaking around farmhouses and setting traps to ambush enemies. Not to mention the awesome tactical shooting segments from an eagle-eyed helicopter, which make their return in nearly every Call of Duty following this one. The beauty here is that Modern Warfare proves a shooter doesn’t need to be full of constant in-your-face explosions to maintain the player’s interest. All it takes is a cast of eccentric characters and a plot full of emotional twists and turns to keep them wanting more. This remaster holds up quite nicely amidst the pantheon of COD titles in more recent history.

Credit: Treyarch

Betwixt my play sessions with the Modern Warfare remaster and my day job, I had decided to go back and play the first Black Ops, which I have heralded for years as not only my favorite of the franchise but also one of my favorite games of all time. Coming away from what was probably my third full playthrough, I must say the game itself is still one of the most mind-bending narratives I’ve ever experienced, however, a few better installments have come along in more recent years. The original Black Ops centers around the Cuban Missile Crisis era, switching between viewpoints of JFK’s America and the Vietnam war. Not only are these environments dramatic and full of quite a few explosive set pieces, but they also hold a tremendous amount of history, which has been altered to form a narrative about top-secret chemical weapons and brainwashing conspiracies for political gain.

I hadn’t replayed World at War before replaying Black Ops, yet it’s apparent just how much it relies on Treyarch’s predecessor to further strengthen its plot, especially when Viktor Reznov joins the fray. Arguably Gary Oldman’s most memorable role, Reznov accompanies Alex Mason – our protagonist – with an admirable quantity of shouting and shooting aimlessly. His lust for blood and revenge fuels the fire that churns Black Ops’s narrative forward, and he is without a doubt the most memorable part of this Call of Duty series of games. Consider Reznov Treyarch’s answer to Captain Price; a grizzled war veteran whom the player character relies on for guidance and general orders. It also helps that both men are chock full of unorthodox methods when it comes to getting a job done. Remember what I said about eccentric characters in Call of Duty?

For some reason, I’ve always held Black Ops in high regard when it comes to the COD franchise as a whole. Perhaps it’s because it was my first real console shooter – which I bought at launch alongside my 360 – and the main reason I officially joined the Xbox Live community. Something about it fills me with nostalgia, and its story still takes me for a ride to this day. Every time I’m blown away by just how many twists and turns lie within, and its ending never ceases to satisfy.

Credit: Infinity Ward

Next up on the list was Modern Warfare 2 Remastered, which is the most recent Call of Duty if we’re not counting Warzone… which we’re not. Released in March 2020 – before things really hit the fan – this remaster of the 2009 campaign was so well made, it nearly fooled me into believing this was a completely new game. Seriously, when put up against the original version, the differences are outstanding. Modern Warfare 2 Remastered’s graphics should be a new benchmark for shooters, and I do not say that lightly. Everything from explosions to facial animations has been redone, and the lighting effects and sounds are exponentially greater than ever before. This game is a genuine milestone for the Call of Duty franchise, and it’s a real shame there’s no sign of remastered multiplayer on the horizon. Compared to the more futuristic installments of recent years, I could easily see myself revisiting this multiplayer in a remastered format. This game itself was a breath of fresh air that not many people saw coming, and it still sits near the top of my Game of the Year contenders so far.

As for the plot itself, Modern Warfare 2 holds up a lot better than I’d envisioned. Going on, I could only recall memories of the final mission, where the player’s perspective is constantly shifting between each protagonist, playing out a full-scale attack on their common enemy. However, after finally taking the plunge and giving it another go, I finally understood why this game took my middle school by storm back in the day. I used to be so jealous of all the guys talking Modern Warfare 2 at lunch, and I with only my Wiimote to keep me company. The campaign in this game had my jaw consistently dropping with so many memorable moments I’d left behind in my youth. From racing down an icy mountain on a snowmobile to defending Burger Town to that epic betrayal out of nowhere? Yeah, that one. The game is just absolutely thrilling, taking risks all over the place and repeatedly knocking them out of the park. Modern Warfare 2 is worth revisiting over a decade later, and I must say the remaster is the way to go about doing so.

Credit: Infinity Ward

To finish off our trip down Infinity Ward lane, I might as well talk about the epic finale to the epic trilogy: Modern Warfare 3. Now, I should preface this with a disclaimer: I have spent nearly nine years of my life absolutely loathing this game. From the moment credits rolled on my initial playthrough of Modern Warfare 3, I thought it was a steaming pile of garbage. Because of this, I had no desire to replay it – not even to finish off the trilogy following my mini-marathon of the first two – and truly had no intention of digging it out of the attic. However, once the thought entered my mind that a Modern Warfare 3 Remastered is almost certain to exist in, say, three years’ time, I figured why not give it another chance to see if that’s deserved?

Well, dear reader, I come to thee in a moment of weakness and humbly hang my head in shame as I deliver these words: Modern Warfare 3 is not as bad as I remembered. There, I said it. Is it perfect? Certainly not. In fact, I think I’ve finally figured out exactly why this game never left a positive impact on me. You see, compared to the former games in this series, Modern Warfare 3’s color palette feels like a shabby little shack on a street full of skyscrapers. This game is full of nothing but muddy browns, gray’s, and greens. Nobody is going to look at Modern Warfare 3 and ever think “That’s a pretty game!” It’s as if someone made the Call of Duty rainbow out of nothing but “sand” and “water.” And “explosion.” Visually, the game is hard to look at and coupled with the massive amount of action sequences, this really takes me out of the experience.

I must say, however, that the game contains more than just action – a note I have come to hate Modern Warfare 3 for over the years. All this time I’ve spent disliking the game for never stepping back and being somber, something every Call of Duty does in its own capacity, making it stand out from the plethora of shooters on offer. But I must now retract that statement and say: although Modern Warfare 3 may have a lot of action – there’s a freaking train chase, for crying out loud – this doesn’t make the game any less of a worthy contender amongst the Call of Duty lineup. I’ll admit, that final mission full of sacrifices and quick-time event struggles still gets me in my feels, and after replaying it again I can honestly say this game deserves to be remembered for more than just the fun I had in Spec Ops mode.

Credit: Treyarch

While Infinity Ward may have been the latest to dabble in this beloved franchise – which we’ll get to in just a moment – Treyarch has always been my favorite of the two, nay, three COD developers. As previously stated, the Black Ops franchise is one I hold dear to my heart, though in the grand scheme of things this is mainly because of my love for the first installment. Black Ops 2, which I also replayed in this marathon, is where the series starts to diverge from the norm, and with it derails my love of the series. Black Ops 2 was the first Call of Duty to make a significant time jump, taking the entire franchise into the literal future, and dabbling in new technology that simply does not exist. This angered a lot of people in later years, what with Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare really stretching the world of sci-fi military weaponry to its limits. However, with Black Ops 2, COD fans were still hanging on. In fact, I know quite a few people who hold Black Ops 2 in such high regard, it remains their favorite installment to this day.

Personally, my memory of Black Ops 2 comes in bits and pieces. Essentially, I went in remembering Cordis Die, Menendez and his burned sister, and Michael Rooker’s character. What I completely forgot about, however, was the entire choice system, which aimed to shake up Call of Duty’s gameplay drastically. In practice, the choices really fall flat, making it feel more like baby’s first Telltale game. Characters can die, but this has barely any impact on the plot itself. There are multiple endings, though none of them are good, per se, and in the big picture this is quite the letdown, seeing as Black Ops 2 serves as a continuation of Frank Woods and Alex Mason’s story – the protagonists of the first game.

As I said back in the beginning, and this will be a big thing to remember when talking about the Modern Warfare reboot, memorable characters are at the heart of Call of Duty. Neglecting them, or messing their writing up in any way, can lead to major problems on a personal note with the player. As you can probably tell, I feel Black Ops 2 seriously mishandles the established characters, though new ones like David Mason and Menendez did leave a lasting impression on me. It’s just a shame the writing affects my feelings on this game, as the levels themselves are some of the best, from going on revenge-fueled killing sprees with a shotgun to riding freaking horses! It’s a blast while it lasts, but in the end, Black Ops 2 is underwhelming and forgettable.

Credit: Activision

Black Ops 2 is so forgettable, in fact, that I never even went on to replay the third game. As the years went on, some more awesome Call of Duty titles came down the pipeline, and while I didn’t replay all of them – and I don’t intend to go into detail on each one – they deserve some recognition for the achievements they made in their own fields.

Speaking chronologically, after Black Ops 2, the world was blessed with Black Ops: Declassified, a mediocre PlayStation Vita exclusive that only I played. If you played it as well, please sound off in the comments. I would love to hear your opinion on its star-based level format and lack of a coherent plot. After this bland spin-off came Call of Duty: Ghosts, Infinity Ward’s attempt at something new. Unfortunately, we never received a sequel to this rather exciting installment, and its cliffhanger ending has been a thorn in COD fans’ side for almost seven years now. Here’s hoping for a return to this series, as its unique spin on an alien-centric “zombies” mode was genuinely captivating, on top of its memorable campaign. Then came Advanced Warfare, which modern-day society likes to forget for… reasons. However, it cannot be denied that this campaign was one of the most cinematic experiences in Call of Duty history, with incredible performances by the whole cast and new additions to the franchise that forever changed first-person shooters as we knew them. Not to mention, Advanced Warfare introduced the world to Sledgehammer Games, who took over as lead developer for the first time in their Call of Duty history.

Skipping over the lackluster Black Ops III, it was with 2016’s installment that I began my writing career, submitting my first ever published review for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. I will forever wave the Infinite Warfare flag and say it is one of the absolute best Call of Duty titles the world has ever received. Its gameplay is so varied, from stealth segments to all-out action sequences to spaceship battles that rival those in Battlefront II. Its optional missions and loadout systems felt so much more fleshed-out than Black Ops 2’s and really made you feel like you had an impact on the world. On top of all this, the story is emotional, the visuals are breathtaking, and… Jon Snow is in it. What more do I have to say?

Credit: Activision

Call of Duty: WWII attempted to bring the franchise back to its roots with a realistic storyline set during World War II, utilizing the weaponry of said time period and doing away with all the futuristic mumbo-jumbo. This was done well and many fans enjoyed it, and as we move on to the current day in the COD timeline, it’s easy to see how Infinity Ward went in the direction they did. After Black Ops 4 delivered a beautifully chaotic “sequel” without a single-player campaign – acting as more of an operative-based multiplayer fan fest with a return to the futuristic feel of old – 2019 brought us back to the realm of real-life struggles and genuine emotion with Modern Warfare, a full reboot of the beloved franchise set in the present.

The Modern Warfare series always revolved around IRL issues and toyed with an impending World War III, all the while dancing around the subject with a veil of fiction and purposeful misdirection. Continuing this trend, the Modern Warfare reboot follows a graphically-enhanced Captain Price as he’s thrust into a new war, following a rather brutal terrorist attack. I never got around to reviewing this game properly – which is kind of why this piece exists in the first place – but one major point I always wanted to touch upon was how dark this game can be. Modern Warfare is hard to watch and play because it’s based in reality. Call of Duty has always tried to tread the edgy line, what with its first-person Russian roulette, nuclear bombs, and children getting gassed. However, Modern Warfare 2019 takes this edgy concept and really pulls back the curtain on today’s very bleak, very grim reality.

The game opens with a first-person view of a suicide bombing – minus the act itself. But the leadup alone is tense, and keeps you guessing until the very end where you wish you could turn back… but you can’t. This game left a massive impact on me, and I know I’ll look back on it for years to come, simply because of how it’s not afraid to take risks. It’s not all about action, it’s not all about looking pretty, it’s not even about establishing memorable characters – all of which are Call of Duty’s core attributes, and all of which it does expertly. But on top of all of these amazing things, Modern Warfare speaks to the player’s soul, and through its hardened, war-torn shell, it asks society to wake up.

Credit: Infinity Ward

Now, with that prophetic tangent out of the way, I figure I should speak a bit on the technicalities of Modern Warfare, seeing as this is partly a review. The first thing you’ll notice is how visually immense this game is; they got all the details down. Faces are a whole experience in themselves, from cutscenes to basic gameplay. Facial expression is so meticulously crafted, with the little creases in Captain Price’s smile so prominent, you’ll hardly believe this is a video game at times. Shooting through doors makes splinters fly. Environments look so weathered, yet at the same time so fresh and new. The sound and lighting design is incredible, with guns sounding heavy and powerful and the hands that hold them looking like genuine photographs.

The things we can do with modern technology are astounding, and they’re all on display here in Modern Warfare. The only disappointing thing is fire, which always looks as if a real-life video was superimposed on a video game environment. New minor additions make the gameplay feel updated, from mounting guns and reloading while aiming down the sights, to regenerating health making a return to the franchise. What had me the most pleased, however, was the inclusion of stealth segments that finally felt like they were properly handled for the first-person point of view. This aspect of FPS games is so hard to nail down, but in Modern Warfare I was truly enamored with the mechanics at play, and how for once I didn’t feel like I was doomed from the get-go. My heart was pounding at one point as I stealthed through a house, and it was such an invigorating experience I’m still thinking about it to this day.

Simply, everything Modern Warfare attempts, it seemingly hits the nail on the head. Alongside these features, there’s a story full of characters whose struggles we can sympathize with, and moments that felt so close to home, I had to pause the game and take a deep breath. Never before has a Call of Duty campaign impacted me on such a deep, emotional level. Yet for some reason, I feel like this attack on the senses makes it one of the best installments to date.

After Modern Warfare in 2019, Call of Duty took a bit of a sharp turn. Leaving behind its ability to tell a gripping, emotional narrative – at least for a brief moment – the franchise released a new contender into the landscape of battle royales. Call of Duty: Warzone is a free-to-play experience across PC, PS4, and Xbox One, which allows players to compete in multiplayer battles with over a hundred other players online. Warzone acts as a sort of Call of Duty playground, utilizing various locales from all the games mentioned above to create a map worth exploring – and explore they have.

In May of this year, players started uncovering clues that have hinted at the next Call of Duty on the horizon. Over the course of three months, curious gamers have scoured the Warzone landscape to discover: what is going on with the Call of Duty franchise? Some believed that Warzone was the future of COD, at least for this year. With a map that can change on the fly, what’s to say it won’t go the way of Fortnite and just deliver fresh experiences through content updates and battle passes, much like they’ve done with Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Mobile? Side note: Call of Duty: Mobile is fantastic, and you should absolutely try it out if you have the storage for it (You can read some more about this wonderful app over here).

Thankfully, we’ve received word in recent weeks that there is, in fact, a new COD coming this year. Dubbed Black Ops Cold War, it seems to take place in the past once again, hopefully bringing my favorite series back to its roots and providing some new flair to history – the initial joy of Call of Duty. Time will tell what lies ahead for Activision’s profitable shooter. While sales have dwindled in recent years and fans have seemingly fallen out of love across the internet, there’s no denying this franchise remains on top when it comes to “games that built a genre.” What Call of Duty has done for first-person shooters is both spectacular and mind-boggling. Taking risks, making memories, and doing the impossible is what it’s all about, and COD does it year after year. Here’s hoping Black Ops Cold War lives up to the hype, and restores Treyarch to its former glory, all the while keeping fans like myself thirsty for more.

Thank you for reading.

Let us take a journey through time together and properly view this esteemed series on a larger scale than most would dare to.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[144779908,352
358473,682625794,682621534,25480,682621142,682621989,682625442,682625696,682621592,682625793,682625697,682622176,682621075,682625792,682625796,682621689,682625795,682621048,682621253
post-16347","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-game-opinions","category-opinion","tag-activision","tag-advanced-warfare","tag-black-ops","tag-call-of-duty","tag-call-of-duty-infinite-warfare","tag-call-of-duty-modern-warfare-remastered","tag-call-of-duty-wwii","tag-cod","tag-fortnite","tag-ghosts","tag-infinity-ward","tag-modern-warfare","tag-nintendo-wii","tag-remaster","tag-sledgehammer-games","tag-treyarch","tag-warzone","tag-xbox-360","tag-xbox-one

SITREP: Call of Duty in 2020 - VGU.TV

<meta name="description" content="Over the years, the Call of Duty franchise has proven itself to be a force to be reckoned with.
