Ever since the planned but later delayed opening day of the season, MLB 20 has been used by all of the major teams to simulate where things would be had the virus never emerged. Along with glowing reviews from all the major outlets, now that the season has begun, the crowd sound effects from MLB 20 are being used by every team in the majors that are currently playing. In the co-op review that I did along with Graydon Webb, we both loved the game. Despite myself feeling a bit disillusioned with the series with MLB 19; MLB 20 reeled me back in hard! I mean, there is a reason that in my portion of the review I gave it a 5 out of 5 score with the game ultimately getting an A as a final grade.

The thing that sold me on the game back during the annual beta prior to the final product release was the general gameplay. When you hit a ball with the new to the series “Perfect/Perfect” system based on timing you get a much more authentic sense of “this feels real” that I personally did not feel with last year’s version of the game. The biggest feature of the game this year was the revamp of the March to October game mode which in the MLB 19 co-op review, Graydon absolutely loathed. When I was playing as the Indians which was in the second tier of teams to choose from based on projections about each team scouting wise, the game mode felt like a part of my nightly ritual of things to do.

As I’ve mentioned on a previous podcast, the game is also my way of testing how I would be as a baseball general manager, in my current four-team save with the Yankees, Mets, Giants, and erm… the Astros I am doing pretty well. With the added feature of re-location for teams, I decided that at the end of my in-game season I will re-locate the Astros to Montreal where they will become the new Expos. Despite this, the Yankees, Mets, and Astros are currently first in the standings with my Giants rebuild team getting closer to the Dodgers in the NL West. With the Yankees, I was able to trade away certain players such as Luke Voit, Masahiro Tanaka, and Giancarlo Stanton and in-return got Sean Doolittle, Lorenzo Cain, and Bryce Harper. While I am enjoying playing as the dominating teams (NYY, NYM, HOU), I am excited every time I play as the Giants and build a dynasty with the prospects I’ve gathered.

Josh Miller – The Family Man

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Credit: Square Enix

Back in May, I wrote my review for Final Fantasy VII Remake. So to read my full impressions of the game, it’s best to start there as I don’t plan on reiterating too much on it. Suffice it to say, it’s still my favorite game of the year. I still think about this game quite often, even while I was neck-deep in The Last of Us Part II, and I think that says a lot about the impression it left on me.

The game is what I was hoping for and more. Even my fears that I held prior to the game release were alleviating upon trying it for the first time. The combat was solid (outside of some inconveniences), the story was expanded on (for better or for worse), and the world of Midgar felt more complete than a mostly disposable setting that it was in the original. I can continue about the improvements, but that’s not the only reason I love the game so much. It’s also where it can go from there.

Credit: Square Enix

Without getting into spoilers, there is enough different from this game that leaves future iterations pretty open. That excites me. Not only can they improve the faults of Final Fantasy VII Remake, but they can tell a story that both old and new fans alike can be surprised about. That has drawn ire for many, but for me, it’s the best thing that can happen. I’ve already experienced the original. Now I’m being given something I didn’t know I wanted. I can still experience similar story beats while still getting something new. I don’t know when I’ll finally see it, but I can not wait.

There’s still plenty of competition coming out later this year. As it stands now, however, Final Fantasy VII Remake is the game to beat for me. Whether any game can is still up in the air, but I’m eager to see if any can edge it out. Not only is Final Fantasy VII Remake one of my favorite games of the year, but it’s also probably one of my favorites of this gen. I’m sure nostalgia is propping that up a bit with my love for the original, but the point still stands. I love Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Graydon Webb – The Contrarian American

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Credit: Nintendo

Having been a huge fan of the Animal Crossing franchise since nearly its first iteration, I signed on with Josh to write our joint review of New Horizons back in April. At the time, I found the game to be a fresh take on the series formula, with new features like the crafting system spicing up gameplay. I did, however, mention that some veterans of the series could feel overwhelmed by this new design, and I ultimately gave it a 4 out of 5. So considering my wavering opinion following quite the abundance of hype, how has New Horizons kept its mantle of Graydon’s Game of the Year so far?

Well, for starters, I haven’t played much else this year. Whilst spending a large majority of my rare free time attacking my tremendous backlog – including a multitude of indie darlings – I’ve noticed that 2020’s gems have remained virtually untouched entirely. I’ve dabbled in Doom Eternal and Call of Duty: Warzone, but the big-ticket games like The Last of Us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima have been tossed to the wayside, for now. I’m disappointed in myself, yes, but I don’t regret finally getting around to awesome games like Sea of Solitude and That Dragon, Cancer, albeit many years late to the party.

Surprisingly, however, the one game that has always kept me coming back amidst the chaos of work, backlog, and life’s stresses… is Animal Crossing. Not only is it still just as fun as the maiden voyage, but the multiple content updates for New Horizons have substantially increased its value for enthusiasts of the series. Perhaps the best new feature is it’s most recent: players now have the ability to swim in the ocean! This has opened up a whole new aspect of gameplay, with new sea creatures to collect, donate, and sell to our old friend, Pascal. He’s not the only familiar face to return since launch, though. Crazy Redd is back – selling suspicious art pieces out of his rickety old boat – and Leif comes around once in a while to peddle his ever-changing assortment of shrubs.

These new additions to the world of New Horizons help make the game feel old again, and I mean that in the best way. Sure, the crafting system and island upkeep are exciting enough on their own to reel in a series newbie, but for players who have sampled everything Animal Crossing has offered for nearly two decades, it’s nice to see some changes coming down the pipeline that can still put a smile on our rugged, war-torn faces. Because let’s face it, after years of indentured servitude at the hands of a ruthless raccoon tyrant, it’s always nice to have a breath of fresh air on this island every now and again.

Emmett Watkins Jr. – PlayStation Stan/Bad Boys II Apologist

The Last of Us: Part II

I know how unoriginal it is to claim The Last of Us as one of my favorite games of all time. However, not only did TLoU P2 justify its existence, but it also managed to surpass my expectations entirely.

You see, to me, The Last of Us is a classic video game in that it uses well-known tropes of zombie and post-apocalyptic fiction to tremendous effect. With major exception to its final twist, I don’t feel like the original game did anything revolutionary or subverted any expectations, but we all excused that fact because the characters and the world-building was so well done.

That wasn’t a knock on the game, as it’s still one of my favorites of all time, but just look at this plot on paper. Oh, look, a camp full of cannibals led by a charismatic psychopath. Oh look, a man with a dark past that has a jaded outlook on life has his heart softened by a girl he’s forced to protect. Oh look, that girl slowly loses her innocence over time due to the harsh world she’s forced to grow up in. Oh look, turns out this girl has the cure and she could potentially save the entire world. I could go on, but it’s like Naughty Dog took every post-apocalyptic trope out there and blended them all together, but because their use of these tropes is so well done, it makes TLoU feel like it’s one of the classics of post-apocalyptic fiction that it borrows so heavily from.

That is why I find The Last of Us: Part II so fascinating in comparison because it no longer feels like “a tale as old as time”. It now feels like a modern tale that doubles down on the daring tone switch of the original game’s ending. After the intro, which I’m sure lulled us all into a false sense of security, the game very quickly showed that it didn’t want to just meet our expectations, but play with them. It might just be the seven years of anticipation talking, but The Last of Us Part II truly felt unpredictable in a way that very few games do. There were many predictions made in the lead up to its release, and so many of them managed to both be right and wrong in ways none of us saw coming. This made the game feel way more dynamic and unpredictable than the original game, and it kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire 24 hours it took for me to beat it, all the way up to its supremely climatic, yet refreshingly quiet conclusion.

And all of that praise comes before even mentioning how fantastic the updated combat feels. The higher fidelity of animations made combat feel cinematic at all times while showing the impact of that violence in a more visceral, and often disturbing, way. Traversal has even improved, with many new mechanics being introduced from Uncharted: Lost Legacy, my favorite in the series. Graphically, the game has truly entered the uncanny valley for me. It looks so much like real life that I found myself perceiving the game as a live-action piece of art. Lord only knows how, or even if, those animations or that graphical fidelity will make it into the multiplayer mode later on.

So, until another game manages to dethrone it this year, The Last of Us: Part II has blown me away more than any other game in 2020.
