The Roleplaying Games have made me feel many emotions in Dragon Age: Origins and for a time had made me angry with Dragon Age II. Then Dragon Age: Inquisition released and I was forever changed. I had originally purchased the game for the Xbox 360 despite owning a Day 1 Xbox One and to this day that game copy has been collecting dust ever since.

*SPOILERS FOR DRAGON AGE II’s Endgame*

In the climax of Dragon Age II, the mage Anders who is possessed by “Justice”, who had both been introduced in Dragon Age: Origins‘ “Awakening” expansion led a campaign of liberation for the mages who had been oppressed by the templars of Kirkwall. This culminated in Anders destroying the Kirkwall chantry killing Grand Cleric Elthina who is presumably killed either in the explosion or by Anders. This lights the fuse on the ticking time-bomb that was the mage rebellion that had been slowly building over the course of Origins and a majority of Dragon Age II. In 9:40 Dragon, three years after the events of Dragon Age II, Divine Justinia called for peace talks at the Temple of Sacred Ashes. The temple itself containing the ashes of Andraste herself which was visited by the Hero of Ferelden and his companions during the fifth blight. This is where Dragon Age: Inquisition begins.

Originally codenamed Blackfoot, Inquisition was a multiplayer-only game that was running on the Frostbite engine created by DICE and mandated by Electronic Arts to be in every game in order to create synergy. This went south for Blackfoot as it would be canceled but BioWare didn’t give up hope and seemed to work with an absolute “cannot fail” mindset. The game would be released in the Fall of 2014 and was praised by fans and critics. When I played it I fell off after a few weeks because it didn’t hook me at first. Then I rediscovered it on PC and let me tell you, that game introduced me to so many characters both good, evil, and in-between. There are fantastic set-pieces and character moments all throughout the game whether you are in Orlais doing political espionage, sieging a fortress, or battling spirits in the fade. There’s a feeling of an epic fantasy adventure that was present in Origins and lacking in Dragon Age II. Here’s hoping Dragon Age IV‘s dev cycle goes well.

Josh Miller – The Family Man

Red Dead Redemption 2

Credit: Rockstar Games

I want to go back to it. I don’t say that to many games, but with Red Dead Redemption 2, it’s absolutely the case. I fell in love with the world. Where some found boredom, I found a relaxing trot through a beautiful landscape. Where some found long-winded, I found (mostly) a story where I didn’t want to see the end. I find Red Dead Redemption 2 is not only my favorite game of the generation but in my top 10 for all time.

For one, the world had me hook, line, and sinker. The random events that would crop up from time to time, although repeated, brought the world to life in ways most open-world games don’t. I also loved running across scenes that people may never see whether it the weird couple who invite Arthur to dinner or the home of The Strange Man. The story of Arthur Morgan was also well-paced and helped set the scene for the game that preceded it. Even Arthur’s conclusion, as heartbreaking and inevitable as it was, felt like it was well deserved and couldn’t have ended any other way.

I’m not naive enough to think it was flawless though. I do wish the camp mechanics were more rewarding. I really wish Guarma never made it into the game. Nothing about the online mode has won me over. Despite all of this, Red Dead Redemption 2 surpassed my lofty goals. I dreaded playing the game at times. Not because I hated the game, but because I didn’t want my experience to end. And quite frankly, I’m saddened that it did.

Before anyone goes back to my 2018 GOTY list to judge its placement of #2 on my list…time has passed and I had just finished the game. Now, almost two years later…I think I’m willing to move it up one. It may have its flaws. But not many games this generation left such a lasting impression in my thoughts, as great as many have been. But Red Dead Redemption 2? It left the best ones.

Graydon Webb – The Contrarian American

Gone Home

Credit: Fullbright

Taking a glance at my favorite games of all time, quite a few stand out from this generation as heavy-hitters. The majority of these are the story-driven indies, like Oxenfree and Celeste. But one of these games sits at the top of my list, and has since its inception way back in 2013 – before this generation of consoles was even released, mind you – and that’s Gone Home.

So how does Gone Home set a precedent for video game narratives, so much so that it lands itself ports on every major console for years to come? Well, for starters, its focus on exploration was unlike any other at the time. There have been quite a few copycats in the world of “walking simulators” since then, but back in 2013, there weren’t a lot of games encouraging exploration to tell a story.

As the player meanders about the protagonist’s abandoned house, a tale unfolds that’s as emotionally gripping as it is environmentally unsettling. The entire house feels haunted and ready to strike at every turn, however, the game never develops into anything more than a beautiful story, played out through minor puzzles and object interaction. Taking control of your entire being, Gone Home never fails to seize the player’s attention and lead them through the game’s 3-hour story in one sitting.

Initially, I considered it cheating to choose a game that hadn’t even launched on next-generation consoles. But now, after looking back on it and thinking hard, Gone Home deserves the right to be here as my game of the generation. Fullbright went on to create Tacoma, another wonderful favorite of mine, which I highly recommend. Tacoma may include more gameplay elements, but its story doesn’t fully compare to that of Gone Home. It’s certainly left a lasting impact on me for the past seven years, and perhaps to celebrate, I’ll give it another go!

Emmett Watkins Jr. – PlayStation Stan/Kendrick Starved

Titanfall 2

What is there left to say about Titanfall 2 that others haven’t already talked about in countless articles, interviews, and video essays (or by me on Twitter)?

Outside of Jack Cooper and BT’s relationship and the entertaining rogues’ gallery, the single-player story is actually pretty minimal. It’s the levels in between those boss battles that are really the highlight. Effect and Cause alone is one of the most mind-bending and unique concepts for a level ever conceived, and the high-speed platforming of Titanfall served as a great template to apply those ideas too. But outside of that one iconic mission, every level is a treat. Each one has a gimmick unique from the last, and the game switches between them so quickly that it leaves you wanting more of each one, which means none of them ever get old.

But the campaign isn’t the reason I’ve put roughly 100 hours into the game over the last few years. It’s the multiplayer component that has kept me coming back so often. Sure, thanks to its streamlined leveling system, it rewards longterm play just as much as any Call of Duty game. And with a heavy slant to player earned customization items, the game deemphasizes the use of its microtransactions, which are still reasonably priced and limited in quantity. But it’s the expert pace and dynamism of its matches that keep me engaged.

Titanfall 2 fills that lull between spawn and gunplay with the most fluid and fast parkour mechanics that I’ve ever seen in a first-person shooter. It makes for a wonderful back and forth between hitting headshots on enemies in midair and sliding and flying to and from combatants. Plus the map design complements this movement system to both encourage and reward mastery of the movement system.

And that’s before even getting to the Titans! Each one plays differently from each other, and when playing to their strengths, every single one can be a blast. But in contrast to the on-foot movement, Titan combat is much slower paced and more about positioning and timing. Because you can’t double-jump away from trouble a millisecond, you’re often forced to outsmart your opponents rather than outrun them. But this trade-off is welcome, because the Titan weapons are often the most powerful in the game, killing pretty much anyone and anything not in a Titan in one hit.

Titanfall 2 understands the issues often found in typical multiplayer games and solves damn near all of them in its premier mode, Attrition. Aren’t quick enough on the sticks to face human players? There are dozens of AI combatants to shoot that contribute to your team’s score. Tired of trying to nail the parkour system? You can piggyback onto any friendly Titan so you can focus purely on shooting. Can’t rack up enough kills to get your Titan? There’s a timer on it so, no matter your performance, you can eventually get to call it in. Did you just outright lose the match, fair and square? Then you can eliminate the enemy team all before they can evacuate, which is often just as satisfying as a conventional victory. Sure, there are modes like Live Fire, Last Titan Standing, and Pilot vs Pilot that reward player skill and mastery of specific mechanics a lot more. But all of these elements make for a game that is welcoming to every type of shooter fan game sings louder than any other game I’ve played and does so consistently over hundreds of matches.

So that’s why I love Titanfall 2 so much. That’s why I never shut up about it on Twitter. That’s why I bought 6 copies of the game on multiple platforms, not only for myself but to gift to friends. That’s why I didn’t hesitate to spend the last $150 I had at the time to buy the Collector’s Edition off of a friend back when he stumbled across a copy. That’s why, despite some missteps, I will always gleefully jump into anything Respawn makes. And that’s why Titanfall 2 is easily my favorite game of the generation.

______________________________________________________________________________

And with that you have our respective Games of the Generation.
