By franchise, I mean the Bungie-helmed games rather than the 343 developed games in the series. Over a decade ago Activision and Bungie went into a partnership over a game called Destiny. It was a GaaS (game as a service) which would mean that it would be released once, and then be continually updated until the next game in the service. Back in 2013, at Sony’s E3 Press Conference Destiny was shown off and the game’s Alpha was made available on the PS4 from June 12th-June 14th and I presumed it would be fun and all was well.

Video Credit: DestinyGame

Destiny would release in 2014 or as I call it “the year of disappointment” as Watch_Dogs, WWE 2k15, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were all released. Which made owning day one editions of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 make the whole next generation of games feel kind of lackluster. My gripe with Destiny back in September of 2014 is the fact that without friends to join up with you the game was utterly useless. After a mission where I had to and failed to hold off, enemy reinforcements that had me swearing over, and over, and over I went and deleted the game from my PS4. Later on, I played with some friends and I found a way to hate the game even more as I got completely lost and was completely salty.

Destiny 2 eventually released and made amends with the angry portion of the player base but I was long gone. After my time with Destiny 1, I had no interest in anything related to the series going forward.

Josh Miller – The Family Man

Mass Effect: Andromeda

This one is painful to write because at the end of the previous generation, I couldn’t imagine a Mass Effect game being on a list like this. Mass Effect 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, and although Mass Effect 3 didn’t stick the landing, I wouldn’t say it was a bad game either. Mass Effect: Andromeda on the other hand isn’t just a step back, but a full-fledged shove off a cliff. Even if you can look past the flat performances, the laughable animations, the cringe-worthy dialogue, and the plethora of bugs that originally plagued the game; Mass Effect: Andromeda is just a dull game. Everything that made the original trilogy one of the greatest series of all time was stripped of everything that made it great, and in turn, we received Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Please watch this video. It showcases so much of what was wrong with the game. What’s sad is that even though this game was deemed a commercial success, it was the reputation that ultimately killed the game. Not only the game but the studio as well. Bioware Montreal would be dissolved and transitioned into EA’s Motive Studios in 2017 and the Mass Effect series would be put on hold for the foreseeable future. Even the rumored Mass Effect Trilogy Remaster has been rumored for years now, and still…nothing (yet…I have hopes still!).

I have no doubt that Mass Effect will return. When it does, it cannot suffer the same way Mass Effect: Andromeda did. Sure, games irritate me all the time! Halo drew my ire for almost the whole generation until I learned to love it in recent years. I thought of Arkham Origins Blackgate and how that shat all over a beloved franchise – but that was the last generation. I recall how disappointed I was when I preordered Nioh, only to find it was a Soulslike and I had been duped. But then I felt like a real idiot when all I had to do was watch a minute of gameplay to know that. Instead, I just preordered it on the basis alone of Japanese ghost culture.

So yeah, I disappoint myself a lot when it comes to video games. But I think there’s one big disappointing game that comes to mind on everyone’s list, and calling it “last generation” may be cheating, considering the Switch generation continues. But guys? We need to talk about Super Mario Party.

Credit: Nintendo

Remember how awesome it was when we learned about a new Mario Party coming to arguably Nintendo’s best console ever? The Switch completely reinvented how we play games with new innovations in motion controls and playing with others. SO of course the definitive party game experience coming to Switch would earn it the title of “Best Switch Game Ever,” right?

Well actually, the game was subpar. Sure, there’s the largest roster of any Mario Party game, three-party modes – not including free play – and 80 minigames. But then the game just kind of… died. You couldn’t play the standard board game online, which took a lot of the “party” aspect away, at least in modern-day terminology. Also, speaking of modern-day, there was no post-launch content! You could’ve turned Super Mario Party into the best installment by filling it with DLC characters and minigames. But you didn’t, Nintendo. Instead, you watched as the player base faded, and now it’s not even one of the games people bring out at parties. It’s just that “well, I have Mario Party” game you trudge out when people come over too late, and the restaurants are closed, and there are no good movies out.

Ask yourself, how many times have you played Super Mario Party in 2020 – a time where you’ve been forced to stay home with people?
Yep. I generally like to stay positive, so I couldn’t think of any game that disappointed me, especially with so many of my favorite games coming out of this generation. But once I pull off the stuff I played, that list fills up quickly.

Both Call of Duty: Black Ops III and Battlefield: Hardline were low points in franchises that are usually consistently good, but neither were games I heavily anticipated. Games like Drawn to Death and Lawbreakers died way faster than I would have liked, but those games were still fun to play despite the lack of a player base. Even games like inFAMOUS: Second Son and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order were made by some of my favorite developers, but I wasn’t necessarily hyped about either of them before release. But there is one game that had the potential to be one of my all-time favorites. And despite me attaching loads of hype to it leading to release, it managed to not hit the spot nowhere near as much as I had hoped. That game is Borderlands 3.

Now, when it was originally announced, I rejoiced like many other fans of the series. The thought of getting to revisit Pandora and its colorful inhabitants with the next generation of visuals and gameplay was an exciting concept. Plus, we fans had been so thirsty for the threequel, that we’ve been hypothesizing what the game would be years before it was revealed. But the first nail in the coffin went in when, upon gameplay reveal, the game was promised to be much closer to the original two games than more modern looter shooters like Destiny and The Division. The promise of a return to form excited me, but little did I know, I had gotten used to more modern gameplay structures and would miss them once I got my hands on the final game.

The next thing that got me was my attempt to play through the prior title’s DLC in anticipation of the game. I played every game in the series solo, so I expected to have no issue doing the same in Borderlands 2’s DLC. Well, I was greeted with a brick wall of difficulty despite my gear being on the same level. Turns out, without teammates to distract them, I could barely take out anyone without losing most of my health. That experience zapped my excitement to return to that outdated structure of the game design, but I still held out hope that Borderlands 3 would modernize things to make it much more dynamic for single players.

And then came release day, where the sobering reality of what Borderlands 3 would became into focus. For those who might have been tired of the grind of modern loot games, the throwback of Borderlands 3 might have been refreshing. But for me, I was so disappointed to see that the same annoyances of the prior games had come into the new generation. Plus. the aggressive and over-the-top humor that tickled me back in when I was 17 became pretty grating and annoying to my 2019 adult self.

But the final nail in the coffin came with the game’s performance. Ahead of the launch, Gearbox promised two graphics modes: one in 4K at 30FPS and one in 1080p at an unlocked framerate up to 60FPS. I was looking to play the performance mode as the higher framerate sounded like a true next-gen feature to look forward to. But alas, the game struggled to hit anything above 40FPS, which made the game feel just as slow as the prior two games, but less consistent visually, leading to a game that wasn’t much fun to play in long sessions.

The game overall just felt like a relic in all the worst ways. The writing felt like it was pulled straight out of at least 2014. Its world lacked the vibrancy found in so many other open-world games. And thanks to its graphical options, it could barely hold a candle to the most visually arresting games this generation had to offer.

It pains me to say that I dropped the game after about 5 hours of playtime, which sucks because I had already bought the season pass and the steel book edition of the game. And even now, over a year later, I still haven’t been compelled to give it another shot. But I remain hopeful, as my PS4 copy earns me a PS5 upgrade for no additional cost, complete with the promise of 4K resolution at 60FPS. If that graphical promise holds true this time, and if I’m able to block out the dialogue with a podcast or album, then I might be able to find some mindless fun. But for now, I’ll have to live with the fact that Borderlands 3 caused me to completely reevaluate my thoughts on the series, and if the game is great in a timeless way, or in a way specific to the early 2010s.

So, there you have our most disappointing games of this console generation.
