The era of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will be done with. From its ashes will rise the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X & S. But with every new console cycle comes the first game played on said platforms. Because things are so screwed as I wrote this when it comes to money some people may have to make a game or two last until things get better. I myself am going to need to survive on Astro’s Playroom which is a game built-in to every PlayStation 5 whether it’s the regular or digital SKU’s and I chose to go with the latter. So now I, along with the rest of the VGU staff will tell you all about the games we first played on new consoles from day’s past.

Allan Muir – Site Admin/EiC/Degrassi Apologist

Dead Rising (Xbox 360)

Credit: Capcom

When I first got my Xbox 360 in December of 2006 I was amazed at how much raw power was in this new console. I had spent the summer of 2006 pleading with my parents to get a 360 and my mind was racing from August to December. I was obsessing over what could be done with this brand new console such as custom soundtracks that could be played over gameplay, achievements, online play, and more.

About a week before Christmas I had gone to the local Blockbuster and rented Gears of War because of all the commercials that were promoting it at the time and the talk about it on the IGN Game of the Year awards for 2006. But that is a tale for another time, for the first game I played on my brand new video game console was none other than Capcom’s Dead Rising!

Credit: Capcom

On the console I had been playing games on prior to all of this; the original Xbox, I was, as mentioned in a previous post, infatuated with Doom. This extended to the Doom theatrical film starring Dwayne Johnson and Karl Urban and after I learned about custom soundtracks on the new Xbox console I was really hyped to play the Doom soundtrack while killing the undead.

Unfortunately, I didn’t know that you weren’t supposed to move the 360 when playing a game. So when I picked up the brand new console with Dead Rising in it I heard a horrid noise I will never forget. When I temporarily turned off the Xbox I extracted the disc and the game was ruined. I gazed upon a circle scratched on the back of the disc. I was heartbroken at what I had done to my treasured game. So how did I find my way out of this conundrum? To this day, it is still one of my most favorite consoles. Along with the system itself, I was given Gaiares (a game I was trash at) and Decap Attack. While Gaiares would be a game to rarely see playtime because I couldn’t get past the second level, Decap Attack would become one of my top games for the Sega Genesis.

In Decap Attack, you play as a headless mummy named Chuck D. Head. I was confused as a kid because although he was headless, he still had a face in the middle of his chest. This was probably done through experimentation from Dr. Frank N. Stein who created him to fight a demon named Max D. Cap. It was a platformer in which you would obtain powerups in the form of potions, find a head that could be thrown to kill enemies, and fight bosses at the end of the third stage of each level.

Credit: Sega

The game wasn’t perfect. Chuck was slow as molasses at times and some of the bosses were downright cruel to fight. That damn mole had me shred lives thanks to the ridiculous speed he would gain close to death. Despite all of that, Decap Attack was an absolute blast for me. Bouncing on enemies would result in them slowly sinking into the ground until they turned to bones for instance. I also LOVE the sound of Chucks face protruding out to hit enemies with every button press. Even Chuck’s twinkle toes to slow down his momentum as he fell to the ground is something I would enjoy. I have so many vivid memories of Decap Attack that I absolutely adore, and I’ve had them ever since I received my Sega Genesis.

I’ve owned many new consoles over my 34 years of life, but Decap Attack is probably THE game I look at the most fondly that I received on the same day I received a console. It’s certainly not one of my favorite games of all time, and it’s not even in the top 10 best games on the console itself, but it’s definitely one I look back fondly at after all of these years. Maybe I’ll introduce it to my son. Some of the content in it is right in his wheelhouse, and it’s possible he’ll fall in love with it just like I did.

Credit: Sega

Graydon Webb – The Contrarian American

Happy Feet (Nintendo Wii)

Credit: Midway Games

Ahh, remember licensed games? The good old days, when every film had its own terrible video game, complete with buggy gameplay that could never hold up against other games of its time, as well as a bunch of levels that absolutely did not represent the events onscreen. I think a lot of us have some licensed games that are near and dear to our hearts, though we may feel reluctant to say such a thing out loud. Well, I’m here to state my piece on the matter, as I’m not ashamed to admit my first game on the Nintendo Wii – after receiving the console for Christmas in 2006 – was Happy Feet: The Video Game.

I don’t expect anyone in the world to remember this game even existing, so I’ll give you a quick rundown from what I can remember. The game consisted of three main level types, each making use of the innovative new motion controls the Wii had to offer. Dancing involved moving the Wiimote in time while following Dance Dance Revolution-esque prompts. Swimming and sliding followed similar gameplay, with the former requiring you to collect power-ups to refill your breath meter, and the latter having you avoid the obstacles in your path.

Credit: Midway Games

The game was fairly simple, looking back on it. However, as a nine-year-old, that shit was damn frustrating at times. I look back on this game fondly, despite these issues, though I can’t exactly put my finger on why. The graphics weren’t great, the gameplay was repetitive, and the voice acting was… well, surprisingly, full of some all-stars. Maybe that was one of its redeeming factors. I do recall the dancing being fairly entertaining, too, but that’s probably because I was a tubby kid who enjoyed Wii dancing games. What? They made me feel better about myself.

In the end, I’m not going to say this was a must-play on the Wii. It’s probably fallen into shovelware buckets over the years, and that’s totally fine. You don’t have to go find this one at a flea market. In fact, leave it on the rack. It’s totally okay to skip Happy Feet: The Game. But personally, this game will always stick with me. I still own it, actually! Might break it out for some nostalgia, as we head into the next console cycle. I’ll always remember that image of my Wii and Happy Feet sitting by the TV.

I hope a lot of kids get that feeling this year. And while that transition didn’t happen until well into the PS3 generation, handheld consoles are where I did the bulk of my gaming. And while I, like everyone else in the country, did own a Game Boy Advance at the turn of the century, the PlayStation Portable is the console that gave me so many more formative experiences

In fact, I remember that Christmas where I got my PSP being a defining moment in my tastes. That day back in 2005, I got both Death Jr and Spongebob Squarepants: The Yellow Avenger. I had had the Walmart store pages for both titles booked marked on our computer for several months beforehand, so the joy I felt when I finally got them was palpable. The few games I did play on my PS2 before this were exclusively action games and licensed platformers, so this pair of games was exactly up my alley.

Well, something changed that day. I set up my system, with my parent’s help, and immediately got to downloading demos, redeeming the PSN card I also got, and trying out my new games. I used that PSN card to get Beats, and even without using its flagship feature of MP3 importing, it was a vibrant and fun rhythm game. Death Jr. proved to be a solid game, with satisfying combat, some creative art design, and twisted humor. But after the first few hours, I began to lust after the other main title I received.

Spongebob Squarepants: The Yellow Avenger, my most anticipated game, was less impressive. Having played Nicktoons Unite and Battle for Bikini Bottom, I expected this to be another 3D platformer, but it barely even hit that expectation. It was 2D, but all of the art was 3D, and it funneled you through different linear planes to fight brain-dead enemies. And while Death Jr wasn’t necessarily a graphical showcase for the PSP, The Yellow Avenger still managed to look hideous and bland in comparison. I could assume that this lack of polish was due to the platform’s constraints, but games like GTA: Liberty City Stories, which I had seen run on the system, proved that to be false. But still, no matter the reason, that game single-handedly kept me away from licensed games for the rest of my gaming life.

We eventually ended up trading that game back to our local Gamestop, and I got Burnout Legends. Burnout was everything I wanted from, as it felt like a near-direct port of Burnout 3: Takedown, one of my favorite PS2 games of all time. The slow-motion crashes, the high-speed traffic dodging, and the wealth of events and cars all flooded my 10-year-old mind with serotonin. Despite my hesitation to make the trade, as I didn’t want to seem appreciative of my gift, I was glad I made the switch. At the time, I saw it as my first step into maturity in some way, but in actuality, it was the first time I began to care about the quality of the games I played. Just because a game shared the name of a favorite show or character, I now needed to be convinced that it was fun to play despite all of that. And my desire for satisfying gameplay has stayed with me all these years and will be the case going onto this next generation.

______________________________________________________________________________

So, these were our first games played on a new console/handheld.
