Video Games are one of the best things to exist in 2020 with this year of hell. (Not to be confused with the Year of Hell storyline from Star Trek: Voyager) Based on data <\/a>from the NPD Group, the games industry is projected to bring in over ten million dollars thanks to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. While things in the video game industry are driven by money, another side of the medium is the enjoyment of the product. For Pete’s sake, a tagline for G4 interstitials during its time as a 24\/7 gaming channel was “for the love of the game”. With Thanksgiving getting closer I felt we should do a Roundtable on games that we are thankful for, happy to play, and feels like we’ve enjoyed a ten out of ten Thanksgiving dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MLB The Show<\/em><\/strong> Series (PlayStation)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have followed my history of writing about Sony’s MLB The Show franchise whether it was on my personal<\/a> blog, LosHarrow<\/a>, or Graydon and I’s co-op review<\/a> of this year’s game, I love the games and there is rarely anything that can be done to make me not have a great time with this franchise. It is one of the few game series that I can actually say “I remember when this first started”, and “I own\/have played every game in the franchise”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I’ve mentioned in previous episodes of Player’s Club, this game series, to me at least, is the equivalent of comfort food. No matter how long I play it, I am calm and at peace. There is the rare occasion where my inner-George Steinbrenner takes over and decides to either initiate a trade while playing as the Mets with the Cubs and trade 3 top-rated players for Javy Baez. Or the time I gave the Giants $500 million in funds to sign the aforementioned Javy Baez, Francisco Lindor, and Kris Bryant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year won’t be the same case because of DIVOC but now I’d usually be getting ready to wind down my time on MLB The Show 20 in anticipation for MLB The Show 21. But unfortunately, we are in the WORST possible timeline to be in and the topic of MLB The Show 21 won’t even be broached until next year. However, the news announcing the previously exclusive PlayStation series would become platform-agnostic in 2021 so either way, I am excited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allow me to bring the room down a little bit. 2018 was a really dark time for me; I’m not ashamed to admit that. After breaking up with the longest-term girlfriend I’d ever had – seeing as she was arguably the first<\/em> – I fell into what I’d consider depression, and the first time I really felt like life didn’t have much to offer me. Do you ever feel like that? Yeah, I’m sure some of y’all get what I mean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyway, while that year brought us quite a few amazing games, I had my sights set on one in particular: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. As you probably know by now, I’m a massive fan of Ubisoft titles, and honestly, the game series I’m most thankful for in general is Assassin’s Creed<\/em>. These games have built me into the type of gamer I am today, and on top of getting me the closest to cosplaying I’ll ever experience, they are the only games that will consistently fill me with joy on the regular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So in 2018 – a year that I’d expected to bring us a new Watch Dogs<\/em> installment – Assassin’s Creed Odyssey<\/em> was set to release. Coming off of Origins <\/em>and the changes that the game brought to the series, I was ecstatic about this next addition. The inclusion of dialogue options, a deeper RPG system, and the setting of Ancient Greece made for what was bound to be the greatest Assassin’s Creed<\/em> to date!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the final product may not have been the most perfect AC <\/em>title, I’m nonetheless grateful for the entertainment Odyssey <\/em>provided. I fell in love with the world and its characters, and it kept me wanting more from these new gameplay mechanics. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey<\/em> gave me something to look forward to when I was at my lowest. I told many people at the time that I was only hanging on for this game, and thankfully it did not disappoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will say that, undoubtedly, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey<\/em> saved my life. That’s certainly something to be thankful for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

I’ve made it no secret how much my kids mean to me. So it should come as no surprise when the game I’m most thankful for is one they adore as well. Growing up, most of the games I played were simple platformers that didn’t require a lot of effort in learning. This was in part to the limitations not only of games at the time but also the controllers being used. So of course I was wary about giving my kids a controller with far more inputs than I grew up with and games a tad more technical than what I played on the Nintendo Entertainment System.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, I tried a LEGO game. Not just any LEGO game, but specifically LEGO Marvel Super Heroes<\/em>. The puzzles weren’t the easiest for them to wrap their heads around at first, but they would eventually get there. However, it was the open-world sections along with the disregard to punish players for dying that helped bring them into the world of video games. The open-world section gave them the ability to mess with the camera controls until they got the hang of it and the same can be said for the movement in a 3D space. Then…combining the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes<\/em> brought my children into video games. They did it in a way that gave them the freedom to learn at their own pace while dropping them in a world they already knew and love. They enjoyed being able to switch characters and chase each other around the world. They loved falling from the Helicarrier just for giggles. Heck, they even liked watching themselves die so their character would explode into pieces in a way that made them laugh. This is why when any parents ask what games are great to get their kids into video games, I always suggest the LEGO games, specifically ones with open-world elements to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While I grew up on games like Super Mario Bros.<\/em>, Bart vs the Space Mutants<\/em>, and Friday the 13th<\/em>; it’s games like LEGO Marvel Super Heroes<\/em> that are getting them into video games. Seeing them learn and love a hobby that I grew up learning and loving (without someone to share that with), is such a wonderful feeling. That’s why I’m thankful for LEGO Marvel Super Heroes<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
