So E3 2021 has officially kicked off! Just like last year, most events aren\u2019t big shows open to the public, but rather a series of digital showcases a la Nintendo Directs. Those begin sometime in June, but before we get down to the nitty-gritty with all the crazy conferences, E3 has given us some bite-sized gifts in the form of gameplay reveals. So today, I figured I would go through this week\u2019s four major reveals and give my thoughts on how the future of gaming is looking. Let\u2019s get to it with our first show of the week, Sonic Central.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sonic Central<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking a crack at the Nintendo Direct formula, Sonic Central was hyped up to be even better than its spiritual predecessor. Unfortunately, the overall news coming out of this 15-minute conference didn\u2019t exactly live up to the Twitter discourse and memes, but that\u2019s not to say it was entirely underwhelming. The show began with the announcement of a Sonic Symphony<\/em> concert on June 23rd<\/sup>, seemingly inspired by the video game symphonies of late. The coolest thing about this is it will be free, so perhaps I will give it a listen, considering Sonic has some awesome iconic music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sonic <\/em>Easter eggs are coming to various games this year. The official Olympic Games Tokyo 2020<\/em> video game is getting a terrifying Sonic <\/em>skin, Two Point Hospital<\/em> is getting Sonic <\/em>skins and d\u00e9cor, and Lost Judgment<\/em> will include a playable arcade cabinet of Sonic the Fighters<\/em>. The Olympic Games Tokyo<\/em> skin is actually pretty genius, considering Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020<\/em> came out two <\/em>years ago, and nobody\u2019s going to be playing that game anymore during the actual Olympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sonic Colors<\/em> was one of my favorite games on the Wii, and I am so excited to see its return. Unfortunately, this is a remaster and not an official sequel, but I\u2019m sure it will look gorgeous and be worth a replay. Sonic Colors Ultimate<\/em> comes out September 7 and will include in-game movie content. Roger Craig Smith is also returning for a new animated Sonic Colors<\/em> series, called Rise of the Wisps<\/em>. He seems like a pretty cool dude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rounding out the show, SEGA announced a new compilation coming soon, including next-gen versions of Sonic 1, 2, 3, Sonic & Knuckles<\/em>, and Sonic CD<\/em>. That is a hefty package of awesome games, and I can\u2019t wait to play them all! Also, the latest Sonic <\/em>games are coming to Amazon Luna and PlayStation Now, and the Sonic <\/em>mobile games are getting new content. Furthermore, Sonic Prime<\/em> is a new show coming to Netflix in 2022, but that\u2019s not the only thing planned for next year\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also got a teaser trailer of a brand-new Sonic<\/em> game, coming to all next-gen consoles! Nothing big was shown, just the blue blur doing his thing, but nevertheless, I am excited to hear more. I\u2019m finding as I write this\u2026 do I actually like Sonic<\/em>? I guess I do <\/em>kind of have a soft spot for the guy. I\u2019ve definitely had more fun in old Sonic <\/em>games than in old Mario <\/em>games. So… I\u2019m not sure what that says about me, but before I seem too fangirlish, let\u2019s move on to the next show, which is something I am not nearly as excited about!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Dying Light 2<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I do not care for Dying Light<\/em> at all. Yes, I am too afraid of it, and I own up to that. Because of this, I am completely numb to any excitement surrounding this game. Granted, I will forever hold out hope for Dead Island 2<\/em>, so I know the pain of a game\u2019s perpetual delayed state. But for fans of the series, Dying 2 Know showed off some cool new stuff about Dying Light 2<\/em>, which I will now share with the class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The game takes place 20 years after the first Dying Light<\/em>, and while I didn\u2019t watch the entire interview with the developers, it sounds like there are going to be plenty of new sights and zombie types to parkour kill across the landscape. My main concern with Dying Light<\/em> is how they get away with \u201chuman factions controlling the streets by day, and zombies coming out at night.\u201d Just seems unrealistic in terms of zombie lore, but maybe that\u2019s explained. I should jump back into it. One thing’s for sure, I\u2019m tired of protagonists named Aiden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gameplay looks gorgeous, and this delay has been time well spent on making the game look fantastic. If you\u2019re itching for more Dying Light<\/em> content before the sequel, however, the Platinum Edition<\/em> of the first game is out right now. It includes all the content, for the lowest price ever, and it sounds like a great deal if you\u2019re into that sort of thing. Also, there\u2019s a fan art contest going on, I think?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We got a lengthy gameplay trailer out of this showcase, which was just mind-blowingly beautiful. The lighting and shadow effects are the epitome of \u201cnext-gen.\u201d The facial expressions are so lifelike. I\u2019m even excited by the inclusion of NPC allies, which will hopefully make it seem a bit less scary. Dare I say I\u2019m looking forward to this game? As I watch the gameplay, I can\u2019t wait to try out this parkour and delve into this world and its story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once again, I\u2019m promised that my choices matter, and that they will shape the plot. I have been promised this before and it doesn\u2019t always work out. Will Dying Light<\/em> live up to its hype of many years running? I guess we will find out (hopefully) on December 7th<\/sup> this year! A collector\u2019s edition is available for preorder with a cool statue, and I just might end up buying this game if I hear it is good. Judging by how I feel right now? I want it. But there is <\/em>a game I want even more\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Horizon Forbidden West<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I initially wanted to write this VGU Reacts because <\/em>of Horizon Forbidden West<\/em>. The 13-minute gameplay demo we received this week got me so <\/em>excited for this game! I am a huge fan of Horizon Zero Dawn<\/em>, and after watching this reveal, well, it just may be a PS5 system-seller for me! There was a lot to see in this demo, so I\u2019ll just jump right in and explain all the cool new features on display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We begin with Aloy, as she embarks on a search for Erend, a fan-favorite from the first game. I was expecting him to die in this demo and really rile up the crowd, but no dice. Instead, we are introduced to a brand-new robot enemy type, Clawstriders, which have been tamed by an enemy faction who have learned how to ride them. In a matter of minutes, every aspect of Horizon <\/em>gameplay is on display. What is most surprising is how fresh and new this game looks while still feeling like an old friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The graphics have been enhanced drastically, with an abundance of flora all over the jungle landscape, making the world feel brimming with life. There are birds and fish, and LOOK OUT ALOY IT\u2019S A CLAWSTRIDER! Bam! They\u2019re on top of her in seconds, and Aloy has to find a way out of this mess. How about going up? So, she uses her Focus scanner to see handholds in the area and climbs a tall tree while the robots pursue her uphill. The AI feels just as smart as the player, and that is both terrifying and fascinating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aloy uses a grappling hook and a new glider (a la Breath of the Wild<\/em>) to escape, ultimately landing in the water. The ocean is vast and serene, but it\u2019s also filled with danger like giant submerged robots who you mustn’t provoke. Underwater stealth is not my forte, but when it looks this gorgeous, I\u2019ll give it a shot! The gameplay just looks so addictive, from traversing the open world to fighting enemies, which is also a system that has been greatly overhauled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Combat is now more fluid, with various attack types feeling necessary instead of a last resort. The placement of arrows also matters, with enemies staggering when hit in different areas. On top of all this, Aloy\u2019s spear can now be charged with Valor Surges, which can be used to break the enemy\u2019s armor on top of many other abilities. The demo ends with Aloy taking down a giant robotic elephant, called a Tremortusk, with a handful of new weaponry – all of which can be upgraded at workbenches in the game. A glue bomb makes the robot all sticky, while a long-range spear can be hurled at enemies riding the beast. The fight is just a beautiful mess, complete with destructible environments and Aloy using the machine\u2019s weapons against itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Horizon Forbidden West<\/em> is not only setting up a brand-new story within its mysterious dystopian world, but it\u2019s also establishing a brand-new era of open-world gaming. Once this game hits the market, we will have truly entered the next generation of video games, and I intend to be a part of it on day one. While there is still no release date for Forbidden West<\/em>, I\u2019ve got my fingers crossed we see it this year. Meanwhile, my toes remain crossed we see this final game in 2021, as well\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Far Cry 6<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have said it on the site many times, but I am immensely excited for Far Cry 6<\/em>. Having recently gone back and beaten Far Cry 5<\/em>, my psyche is yearning for another emotional rollercoaster full of explosions and treachery and climbable towers. Sadly, Far Cry 6 was delayed back in February, but this week we got gameplay reveal from Ubisoft and it did not disappoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll start by saying Giancarlo Esposito is an absolute king<\/em>, and he is the perfect Far Cry<\/em> villain. This is not to say the other villains have been bad \u2013 quite the contrary \u2013 but when you imagine Far Cry<\/em> villainy, you picture someone who is simultaneously intimidating and empathetic, which is kind of Esposito\u2019s thing; he’s a master of condescending smiles and an insanely stern gaze. I love the guy, and I can\u2019t wait to see what he brings to this game. Not to mention, the beautiful cutscenes make it look like we\u2019re just watching a movie with him in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story of Far Cry 6<\/em> sounds like the typical plot but cranked up a notch. The team at Ubisoft Toronto is really trying to make the \u201cguerrilla fantasy\u201d feel as realistic as possible. As you and your crew take on treasonous armies, you will ride horses, boats, helicopters, and burn everything to the ground along the way. Taking the reins of a young female protagonist, you will slowly but surely have your revenge on the island nation that took everything from you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The game looks like dumb fun, the way Far Cry<\/em> should be. The customization options are endless, the weapons sound tight, there\u2019s a freaking alligator in a t-shirt! I love it; I really love it all. From jet packs to using CDs and fireworks as weapons, there is something here for everyone. Also, props to Ubisoft for finally letting us play as a woman \u2013 a woman of color, even \u2013 and just putting a lot of passion into this game and its culture. My one concern is that the gameplay graphics look a bit muddy, but hey, it\u2019s still early. Far Cry 6 <\/em>will be out on October 7, if we\u2019re lucky, and yes, that wheelie wiener dog will be there, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
