As we have passed the halfway point of 2021, we felt why not revisit an old roundtable idea<\/a>? Specifically what our favorite games of the year have been so far. There’s still much to come, but it’s always good to reflect on what has already come – especially before the game of the year time hits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So check out below to find out from the staff here what our favorite games of 2021 currently are!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Josh Miller – The Family Man<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last Stop<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m not going to lie…2021 hasn’t had a ton of games that interested me. And some that have been on platforms I don’t own (I’m looking at you Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart<\/em>). However, of the ones that have, Last Stop<\/em> has stood out as my favorite of the bunch. I’m at that point in my life where I love a chill narrative heavy experience, and Last Stop<\/em> satisfied that very itch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those unaware, Last Stop<\/em> is another narrative adventure game in the vein of games released by Telltale or Dontnod. Annapurna has done so well picking the games to publish, and Last Stop<\/em> is no different. The game has you bounce between a few different characters within six chapters (plus the 7th that ties everything together). As someone who has difficulty finding time to play, its nice to complete a chapter in a reasonable amount of time each play session, though the time could vary between 5 minutes and 20 minutes. The characters are great (god I love Molly), the mysteries and suspense keep me engaged, and I felt thoroughly happy with my experience by the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last Stop<\/em> somehow stayed under my radar prior to its release. That probably helps it stand out more. But I’ve also found most games are in genres I’m not interested in, and those I’ve been excited about, have let me down. The latter half of 2021 has some games I’m eagerly awaiting, so I don’t know if it’ll crack my top 5 come game of the year. But as of right now, it’s one of the top games of 2021 and everyone should try it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

First off, for those of you who want to listen to the special Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart<\/em> spoilercast Player’s Club episode Emmett did with Cameron Hawkins and isoChristian look here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have mentioned numerous times on Player’s Club that I have not played nor beaten a Ratchet and Clank game despite owning all of the mainline games in the series. However, I was told that there was no barrier to entry with the latest installment in the Ratchet and Clank<\/em> game: Rift Apart and the only possible problem I would have is that there are things that longtime players would catch and appreciate. So I started the game and boy was I in for a treat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main story in Rift Apart is Doctor Nefarious stealing a multi-dimensional device built by Clank as a gift to Ratchet so he can find the other Lombaxes. This results in Nefarious creating inter-dimensional rifts and traveling to a parallel dimension where his doppelganger is Emperor of said dimension. What I didn’t expect with this game as I was on a media blackout so I wouldn’t run into any spoilers was which of the two new characters introduced would have the bigger character arc, Rivet or Kit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The writing for this game blew me away as new characters introduced were charming, the twists on established characters, and the character arc of Kit. The Clank of this dimension who seemed to be attempting to atone for something it had done and my entire time playing the game I was very curious as to why she was acting this way. Once the game showed what Kit had done I was starting to put 2 and 2 together and the redemption Kit gets made me glad I played the game and more importantly got to experience this phenomenal story. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Graydon Webb – The Contrarian American<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It Takes Two<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without a doubt, It Takes Two<\/em> is my favorite game of 2021 so far. If you know me, this should come as no surprise, for I\u2019ve been a fanboy of Josef Fares and his team at Hazelight for many years. With games like Brothers<\/em> and A Way Out<\/em>, Mr. Fares has supplied the world of gaming with beautiful couch co-op experiences spanning multiple console generations. With this latest release, he\u2019s put all his creativity into a quirky love story that tugs on the heartstrings and gives you a run for your money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you haven\u2019t played It Takes Two<\/em> yet, well, I highly suggest you give it a shot. I further stress my point if you have a gaming buddy to recruit, as the game is built from the ground up for cooperative play. It even offers a free friend pass, allowing just one copy of the game to be purchased in order for two people to play. It Takes Two follows a soon-to-be-divorced couple who are shrunken down and turned into dolls by one of their daughter\u2019s books in an effort to save their marriage. Players must take control of the bickering spouses and fight their way through countless puzzles in order to get their normal lives back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The game is surprisingly hefty, with a considerable base runtime and quite a few mini-game puzzles to discover. I\u2019ve yet to even beat the game, but my sister and I have been having a blast all year as we slowly chug along. The game is breathtakingly gorgeous, and it\u2019s as humorous as it is emotional. One scene, in particular, has you doing something so horrible to a stuffed animal I can\u2019t even begin to describe it, yet it\u2019s handled in a way that\u2019s both comical and gruesome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It Takes Two<\/em> is an ambitious success, taking a concept that feels rather simple and delivering a finished product with so much detail, polish, and genuine passion that it\u2019s guaranteed to stick with me for years to come. Josef Fares has a real masterpiece in his hands with this one, and it just may remain my game of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Emmett Watkins Jr. – All-Star Brawler<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knockout City<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m sure many reading this know me as either the massive Kendrick Lamar fan, the Titanfall 2<\/em> fan, or the PlayStation All-Stars<\/em> fan. But there are 3 things I also love that I really don’t talk about often enough: crab walking, karaoke, and dodgeball. So, when Knockout City<\/em> was revealed during a Nintendo Direct earlier this year, it instantly captivated me. The promise of cross saves & cross-play and the vibrant art style had me excited to play the final product, but I wasn’t prepared for just how well it would land once it was released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I already got the vibe from it that it would be a niche title, so I was fully ready to play it for a few weeks before it would lose its player base and support soon after. But that was not the case, as millions of new faces hopped into the game within the first week, and many of them stuck around for way longer. Turns out, the novelty of multiplayer dodgeball is novel enough to attract more than just me. It compelling combines the Arena pacing of Quake Live and the accessible, yet deep, mechanics of Smash Bros to make a not-quite-shooter unlike anything on the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My biggest concern in my review <\/a>was that the player base wouldn’t stick around, but throughout the entirety of the game’s first season, finding matches have been easy and buzz around the game has remained positive. But with the game’s second season of content, complete with a Movie Theater theme, new map, and new ball, we shall see if this is enough to keep people coming back as 2021 floods us with more new titles. But regardless of player retention, the folks over at Velan Studios have made a remarkable dodgeball game, and it’ll be one that, surprisingly, sticks in my mind for way longer than any of the haunted castles or alternate dimensions I’ve visited this year…at least so far.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
