A game that really spoke to us but just didn’t sell well enough to deserve a sequel. Occasionally we are thrown a bone like Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst; but sometimes, nothing ever comes.

So we at VGU.tv wanted to take a moment to look back at games we loved that never received a sequel…but absolutely should have had one. Our picks are below and feel free to sound off in the comments!

Graydon Webb – The Contrarian American

Bulletstorm

Credit: Steam

Take a moment and really think about this one for a moment. It can be a strong narrative or some mechanics you’ve never experienced before, or it could just be an absolute thrill ride of dumb bloody fun that you’d love to experience all over again.

Bulletstorm instantly came to mind when I was offered up this question. Sure, I’d love to see a beautiful game like Never Alone get some more colorful Iñupiaq tales put to puzzles for me and my sister to tackle, but at the end of the day, I’d just love to live in the world of Bulletstorm again. I was a fan of this game from day one, and what I thought would become a massive franchise kind of puttered out rather quickly. The game got a remaster that did fairly well, but it didn’t revitalize the name in a substantial enough way to bring on a sequel, sadly.

Credit: People Can Fly

Bulletstorm just had everything a young teenage boy could want in a video game: copious amounts of swearing, violence, and gore. One of the best gems from the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3, Sleeping Dogs is a beloved cult classic. However, despite selling well enough to cover development costs (good ole Square Enix and those unreasonable expectations), the game itself was deemed a failure. Thus, the planned sequel and all of the interesting ideas behind it were scrapped. Even the spin-off Triad Wars never saw the light of day.

While there are plenty of games I would love to see a sequel for, Sleeping Dogs is easily up there as one of my most wanted. I was more interested in the characters, story, and setting than any Grand Theft Auto game, and I found the mechanics leap and bounds better. Not relying on firearms (mostly) was so smart and really highlighted the Batman-esque combat while utilizing the environment in clever ways. Tying in an experience system based on your actions and ways of playing was the icing on an already sweet cake.

Sleeping Dogs is just one of the many games released from that generation that deserves not only more love but a sequel. It still stands out as one of the best games in that genre and I will sing the praises of good ole “sleepy dog” anytime. Sadly, since this game was released, developer United Front Games has been shuttered. So maybe a sequel wouldn’t hit the same way. But my god, I would love to play as Wei Shen again in Hong Kong. At the very least, we still have the film adaptation to look forward to, right?

Credit: Square Enix and United Front Games

Allan Muir – Site Admin/EiC/Living Sequel

Aliens: Colonial Marines

Credit: Terminal Gamer

I’ll be honest, I really enjoyed Aliens: Colonial Marines despite it being universally panned by critics and consumers. Back in 2006 when this game and what would become Aliens: Crucible were announced, I was extremely excited. I was getting into the Alien series of films. I have pretty vivid memories of being on the official Alien forums and just getting hyped for something that was half a decade away and a sequel to one of the greatest films of all time.

After the game was delayed I was worried. Not just because I had to play Aliens vs Predator 3. (Check out my review of AvP3 from over a decade ago!) This was back in the time period when game delays made people angry instead of relieved. Then there was the infamous E3 2011 “Presentation” of the game. I am using quotations because the game being shown off isn’t Aliens: Colonial Marines but something along the lines of the Halo 2 Campaign demo from E3 2003.

Credit: GameSpot

This demonstration of the game had me juiced as anyone could possibly be about a video game. At the same time, I was very confused about where things could go based on the ending of the gameplay demo. There were also little things that I was interested in from the demo. The first was the 341-B synthetic voiced by Lance Henriksen was going to be named “Rook” which is a concept I really like and can totally see in the Aliens world. The second was the idea of mutated Xenomorph’s which would have resulted from the destruction of the Atmosphere Processor. The other thing that stymied me when it came to this game was the fact that the explosion caused by the Atmosphere Processor should have turned LV-426 into a barren wasteland nightmare of a planet similar to that of Mad Max.

*SPOILERS FOR Aliens: Colonial Marines‘*

The revelation of Karl Weyland being a synthetic after the said character is shot and killed by Hicks was very poorly written as the shock ending to AvP3 revealed that the “Karl Weyland” who was killed by the protagonist in the games final level was an android.
