While certain VGU staff members will no doubt want to play it, some (and mostly I mean me – Josh Miller) have little interest. Not because of the type of games Traveller’s Tales release. Oh no, the LEGO games are genuine fun. It’s clear too; your games showcase that point perfectly. Which is why working with Traveller’s Tales and giving them free reign of your huge catalogue would be wonderful. You’ve already been okay allowing outside studios to do something with your franchises – Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Cadence of Hyrule, and New Pokemon Snap; just to name a few. So why not let a studio as well regarded and beloved as Traveller’s Tales take a shot as well?

Imagine running around an open world based on Nintendo properties. I originally thought Mario would be enough, and it probably would be, but let’s shoot for the stars here. Super Smash Bros. has already opened the door for crossing franchises over, and Traveller’s Tales could make a better and more engaging story than what that game did. Even something as simple as “all the bad guys team up” would be perfectly fine. Each level could take place in a different Nintendo world of sorts, and even certain locations like Hyrule or the Mushroom Kingdom could act as their open world areas. I’m talking about everyone’s favorite punching bag, the old teenage romance novel-turned-film series about vampires, werewolves, and CGI babies. After finally indulging in the franchise while quarantining with COVID in April, I found myself falling in love with not only the story overall, but the characters, the action, and the drama. Twilight is a damn good series – there I said it.

Fangirling aside, I would really love to see Twilight get the LEGO treatment. It seems so easy to take an epic film franchise like Pirates of the Caribbean or Star Wars or Lord of the Rings and turn it into a humorous, family-friendly game about slapstick comedy and busting things open for sweet, sweet studs. Why should Twilight be treated any different than those other blockbusters? With five movies to play through and the possibility of DLC characters from Fifty Shades of Grey to Stephenie Meyer herself, the possibilities are endless here! Sure, it may be a little past its time at this point, but The Twilight Saga still has enough fans to push many, many copies of this brilliant game.

Emmett Watkins Jr. – Umbra Witch/Big Stepper

LEGO Bad Boys

We’ve had, just, so many LEGO games over the last few decades, and most of them are great. But one reason most people only play one or two of them instead of trying to play the entire series is that they all play super similar to one another. Ever since LEGO Star Wars, pretty much every game in the series has been a pretty simple beat em up. Sure, Ninjago added more Arkham-like combat and the open world iterations added vehicles, but fundamentally they have all been melee based. Well, with the recent release of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, they’ve introduced some light 3rd person shooting into the mix for the first time, complete with a cover system and location-based damage. This got me thinking of media franchises that would translate well into a cute shooter with the LEGO aesthetic, and Bad Boys was instantly the one that made my mouth water the most.

2019’s Bad Boys For Life was very clearly trying to set up the series to be a full-on franchise going forward, so the brand will likely have relevance long enough for a game to make sense. And additionally, some of the most most fun aspects of LEGO games is seeing how they kid-ify these slightly more adult franchises. Well, Bad Boys is all R-rated, so seeing how they’d playfully dull the edge of the extreme violence and some gratuitous sexuality would be hilarious to see. Plus, Mike Lawery and Marcus Burnet are such classic archetypes, that this could be a perfect opportunity for Traveler’s Tales to try out the silent comedy of older titles.

And none of this even mentions how awesome the gameplay of this could be thanks to the bombastic setpieces of the series. Imagine playing through the chase scene from the opening of Bad Boys II, dodging cars on the freeway and watching the studs fly. Or the shootout in the cathedral in the third film, where you could shatter colored glass and have it drop down on enemies. And imagine how intense the “thread the needle” scene from the end of Bad Boys 1 would be if you got to be behind the car yourself. This idea has a lot of potential and considering TT games already has experience with cop comedies with Lego City Undercover, I think this game could truly be something worthwhile.

Allan Muir – Site Admin/EiC/Pokethusiast

LEGO Pokemon

Credit: Toy Game Shop

So, as you probably know from any podcast I have been on as of 2020, I am a really big fan of Pokemon. I have most of the games at this point and have fond memories of playing Pokemon Red and Blue back in the late 1990s. This and the Pokemon animated series on Kids WB firmly cemented my love for the franchise. The franchise and television series have been around for 25 years at this point they have done films, television series, trading card games, manga, educational books, and more. But there is one thing that they haven’t done: a Lego game. While the Nendoroid is currently the closest we will get to any interaction with Pokemon I have some ideas of what I would want to see from a Pokemon Lego game.

Most, if not every Lego game is the equivalent of mashing your action figures together until they are completely and utterly battered. What I mean by that statement is you are in a Lego form of whatever franchise you are playing be it Star Wars, Marvel, DC, etc.… While the Marvel games have put their own spin on the formula, said formula nine times out of ten revolves around breaking the scenery and then building it back together in-game. My vision for a Lego Pokemon game would simply be a Pokemon game remade in the Lego format. The only example I can give as to what that would look like is the PlayStation 3 title 3D Dot Game Heroes. A game that is a near blatant rip-off of the Legend of Zelda but done in 3D with modern visuals and lighting while staying true to the aesthetic of Zelda. It was wonderful.

Credit: 10Min Gameplay (YouTube)

As I write this, I have just done a quick YouTube search for Lego Pokemon, and wouldn’t you know, there’s already a fan game of Pokemon as if it were within the Lego world. Not only that but it is treated with love and respect, which at the end of the day is all that matters. I will embed the video but as I previously said, a Pokemon game without any reference to the Lego redesign it would be in is the equivalent of Michael Caine’s performance in The Muppet Christmas Carol.

Credit: Bearly Regal (YouTube)

And there we go!
