On the video game front, 2022 was….weird. Obviously, COVID hit the industry hard leading to many delays and a more barren than usual year for gaming. That doesn’t mean there weren’t great games though. Elden Ring, Horizon Forbidden West, Tunic, Xenoblade Chronicles 3<\/em>, God of War Ragnarok<\/em>, and more; have all made for a fun and interesting year. Now that we are closing in on the end though, it’s time to look forward and give our hopes for 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So here are what the writers of VGU.tv are hoping to see next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Josh Miller – The Tarnished Family Man<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To say Microsoft had an underwhelming year in terms of exclusives would be an understatement. Yes the Forza 5<\/em> Hot Wheels DLC dropped and Pentiment<\/em> was released this year, but the heavy reliance on Game Pass and third-party console exclusives such as Scorn and Warhammer 40K: Darktide is clearly noticeable. For a company that has ramped up its studios so heavily over the last few years, having an off-year still feels weird – pandemic or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So for 2023, I’m curious to see what Xbox Game Studios has at the ready. We know games like Redfall<\/em> and Starfield<\/em> should hit, but games like Fable 4<\/em>, The Outer Worlds 2<\/em>, Everwild<\/em>, and more are still on the back burner. It should be a big year, and by all accounts, it will be. It’s just a matter of what is ready, what will be delayed, and what surprises they still have in store. Now mix in Game Pass and other potential third-party exclusives, and Microsoft could have a runaway year in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve mentioned that my reasoning for buying an Xbox<\/a> wasn’t because of the exclusive games. Since owning the Xbox Series S, that hasn’t changed. Which is kind of sad. But there are things I am interested in. Whether they stick to the landing or not is still to be seen. But I’ll be even more excited if those games come out in 2023 and make me happier about my choice in the purchase of an Xbox over a PlayStation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

While I\u2019m excited about a lot of games on the horizon that I hope release in 2023, my biggest hope for this coming year is a deep dive into accessibility. Allow me to explain my three biggest wishes. Number One: I\u2019d like the Big Three consoles to jump into the cross-play market headfirst and really make some progress. We\u2019ve seen some games open themselves up to cross-platform play, like Among Us<\/em> and Rocket League<\/em>, and even some Call of Duty<\/em> titles. But I would really like to see the console manufacturers themselves put a focus on everybody getting to play together as one big happy family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of console manufacturers, Number Two: let\u2019s see some GD consoles out in the wild! Seeing as we’re now three years into this new console cycle, it would be nice to be able to go into a store and actually purchase a next-gen console right off the shelf! I understand COVID set back a lot of electronics production, but I think 2023 is the year we get things back on track and really push those console sales! Will this be the year I finally cave and purchase a PS5? Well, if my experience with Rollerdrome<\/em> this past week is anything to go by\u2026 all signs point to yes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, what about Number Three on my 2023 accessibility wishlist? Well, that\u2019s where the spotlight turns to Nintendo. My dear, sweet Nintendo. Listen, kid, you got spunk, I\u2019ll give you that. You had some real bangers at launch and the ability to take AAA games on the go was quite the selling point back then! Hell, I will admit you did what the Vita couldn\u2019t! But now, going into 2023 with Steam Decks reigning supreme\u2026 you have to change it up! You have to step into the future! You have<\/em> to release a new version of the Switch. Finally. We know the rumors, we know<\/em> this thing is out there, somewhere! The world is ready for a 4K handheld gaming machine, preferably with a new and improved social system and a rewards program that\u2019s worth paying attention to! Overhaul everything, and they will come. There\u2019s no better time to revamp Nintendo than now. It\u2019s all about making gaming more accessible to gamers new and old. Let\u2019s make this the best year yet, by making it really for<\/em> the people, not just the investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allan Muir – Consistently Inconsistent<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

More Consistency From The Known IPs<\/h2>\n\n\n

If there is a word I can sum up 2022 with its “inconsistency”. Every major series or franchise that had a game release this year was either middling or not up to par. Everything from Gotham Knights<\/em> to Pokemon Scarlet<\/em> to The Calisto Protocol<\/em> was a major letdown from what was expected from them. There are even more franchises and series that have new iterations due out in 2023. Star Wars, Dead Space, Resident Evil, and countless others. They need to make an impact and more importantly; be good experiences for those that choose to play them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I personally want Suicide Squad<\/em> to be a good game as it will be the late Kevin Conroy’s final outing as the caped crusader before his untimely passing recently. Plus, I need my fix on Jedi: Survivor<\/em> and Star Trek: Resurgence<\/em>. While it is pretty clear that Survivor will be good I am iffy on Trek. It will be the first proper non-VR game since Star Trek 2013<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As well as the original games from known franchises I want to see the remakes from the horror pros succeed as well. Mainly Resident Evil 4<\/em> which is a sentence I never thought I would catch myself writing. As well as the Dead Space <\/em>remake due out next month. While I know Covid has upended almost if not every game development cycle there are games that have bucked the adverse trap most games have fallen into. Elden Ring<\/em>, God of War<\/em>, Horizon<\/em>, and WWE 2k22<\/em> specifically nailed the landing. Let’s just hope 2023 nets more positive reviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
