\"Emotional<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Video Games are art in my eyes. For every gore-fest game out there you havean emotional game masterpiece: games like Gone Home<\/em> and The Walking Dead<\/em> games which initially started with Telltale and finished under Skybound Games. What I\u2019m trying to get at is the interactive element of video games allows the player to connect with the world of whatever game they are playing and have it as a different interaction when compared to other mediums such as television, film, or other art forms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the growth of the games industry over the past twenty years, there has also come a leap in quality with games looking on par with films. That being said even when games were starting to make leaps in terms of narrative and storytelling, there were key games that paved the way. I\u2019m just letting you know now, that there will be SPOILERS so be aware, cautious, and vigilant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Life is Strange (2015)<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n

I think I\u2019ve made it pretty clear that I have an affinity for the Life is Strange<\/em> series. I discovered it after the death of a family member and it tore my emotions apart. I had never experienced anything like it before and I was hooked. The pacific northwestern town of Arcadia Bay felt like a lived-in location and as the story unfolds the decision as to how the first game ends made me feel like I was the worst person in the world. Much like an iconic line from one of the greatest films ever made \u201cStar Trek II: The Wrath of Khan<\/em>\u201d in which Spock tells his good friend James T. Kirk that logically \u201cthe needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tragedy of Rachel Amber and if you end up making the choice; Chloe Price, messed me up. The discovery made by Max and Chloe in the penultimate episode of the five-game \u201cseason\u201d had me choked up mainly due to the talents of Ashly Burch making me invested in the character of Rachel Amber who would not be fully fleshed out until 2017\u2019s prequel to the first game aptly titled \u201cBefore the Storm<\/em>\u201d. Before the Storm<\/em> ends on a particular horrifying note that takes all the feelings you had stored in yourself from the first game that gets built up and promptly explodes. This results in crying into a pillow in my case\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those of you who haven\u2019t experienced the game, you are missing out on a deep, layered world. Not only was Life is Strange<\/em> a critical darling that would gain a dedicated fanbase, but it saved the studio that created it: Dontnod. Seven years after the first game was released on the major platforms the series is still going strong with last year\u2019s third entry in the series; Life is Strange: True Colors<\/em>. The only thing that still pains me emotionally is the fact that Dontnod will most likely never make another Life is Strange<\/em> game considering Square-Enix, a company that was in a similar situation prior to the launch of Final Fantasy<\/em>, ended up acquiring the IP rights to the series.<\/p>\n\n\n

I can’t imagine anything hits harder than the loss of a child. Nobody should ever have to experience that, and hopefully, I’ll never have to. Amy and Ryan Green did though. To help process those emotions and bring something positive out of a true negative, they brought That Dragon, Cancer<\/em> to fruition. A game full of life, sadness, faith, frustrations, and most importantly, love. There is no game, and possibly any media, that had me bawling like That Dragon, Cancer<\/em> did by the time it wrapped up. Even now, thinking back to my experience playing it for the first time last year, I’m tearing up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s easy to chalk the feelings up to being a fellow parent. And maybe that’s partially true. Having basic empathy though takes you a long way. If you have that, That Dragon, Cancer<\/em> will hit hard. Whether it the tones of a child they recorded before his passing, the actual sympathy cards received by those who also went through a loss, real voicemails left, or even the intimate conversations of two parents struggling to make sense of their emotions; That Dragon, Cancer<\/em> gives players plenty of reasons to feel included in this horrible event. Even knowing the outcome, which I did, doesn’t soften the emotional blows that come throughout those couple of hours playing the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I’m typing this up, I realize that no amount of words can adequately describe how I feel. Jason Tanz over at Wired did a great job back in 2016,<\/a> but I’m sure he feels the same way. There’s a documentary about this game called Thank You for Playing<\/a> that I don’t know if I can sit through without shedding a tear. At the very least, if you want a quick emotional moment from Ryan Green, you could watch his acceptance speech at the 2016 Game Awards<\/a>. Whatever your poison, this game is pure emotion. From how it was created, to how it was received. It is for all of these reasons and more that That Dragon, Cancer<\/em> is the game to make me an emotional wreck.<\/p>\n\n\n

Old Man\u2019s Journey<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n

I know I tend to ramble on about random indie games that have touched my heart, but if you haven\u2019t played Old Man\u2019s Journey<\/em>, you\u2019re seriously missing out. Not only does it have an impressive style of gameplay that\u2019s unlike anything I\u2019ve seen in a video game, the story is an unexpected emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. Old Man\u2019s Journey<\/em> follows an old man who receives a letter and starts out on an unknown quest. Unknown to the player, that is, as he travels across various landscapes, interacting with the land around him, as well as the people who inhabit it. With no dialogue at all, it can be hard to establish any kind of emotional tone. However, the style and color of each locale helps paint an emotional picture as the game progresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real joy of Old Man\u2019s Journey <\/em>shines through its innovative traversal mechanic. Faced with a hand-drawn storybook world, the player must physically grab the lines marking each landscape\u2019s \u201cfloor,\u201d so to speak, and by raising them up or down, they solve traversal puzzles that get our titular protagonist wherever he aims to be. It\u2019s an original twist on the puzzle genre that reminds me of something I\u2019d see in a flash game; it\u2019s just so devilishly simple it must be seen to be believed. This style of movement enhances the storytelling by relying on the world around you to move your protagonist, allowing you to take in every bit of scenery as you go along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is here that I must provide a spoiler warning<\/strong>, as touching on the emotional aspect of this game may ruin the journey entirely. While you never get to read the initial letter the old man receives, in the game\u2019s final moments you do<\/em> find out the intentions behind his great journey. He has come home from his lifetime of isolation to say goodbye to his wife, now on her deathbed, at the behest of his estranged daughter. You see, the old man left his family years ago to pursue his dreams on the sea, and left all he had loved behind. This sudden tearful reunion at the end of a rather upbeat game left me heartbroken and stunned, and thankful for the adventure I had just completed. \u2018Tis one I shall never forget.<\/p>\n\n\n
