One of the greatest villains of all time once said, “This town needs an enema!” Much like Gotham City, video games need a few of their own too. So we here at VGU wanted to take a moment to bring up some of our favorite villains that we went toe-to-toe with over the years. There are certainly more worth mentioning, but maybe that’s for another future roundtable…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Josh Miller – The Clown Prince of VGU<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luca Blight – Suikoden II<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

A few years ago, I spent a year focusing on my backlog. One of those games I finally visited was Suikoden II<\/a>. To this day, I still feel like that was one of the better backlog games to knock out. One of the most fascinating things about that game was the villain Luca Blight. Luca was a monster. He had a bloodlust like no other character I’ve seen with no real end goal other than the joy of seeing people die. And he reveled every second of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike so many other villains, there wasn’t any grand plan. There is no elaborate backstory to make you feel bad for him or justify his actions. He was a sociopath, plain and simple. Luca would instigate wars just so he could kill people. He burns down villages and makes people grovel and act like pigs before he unceremoniously murders them. All while laughing maniacally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It took hundreds to kill me, but I killed humans by the thousands!!!!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s one of the last things Luca says in the game. Even in his dying throes, he has a way to make you absolutely despise him. His joy in how many lives he took and the effort it required to take him down. But not just that….he saw his victims as “humans” in an almost perverse way of viewing himself as something different. Something more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luca Blight is the most sadistic antagonist I have seen in a video game. He makes you hate him from his first appearance, and even after he is gone, his vile actions are so large that the game has to continue proceeding to wrap them up. There is no amount of redemption for this character and I wish more villains were written similar to him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Graydon Webb – The False Prophet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vaas Montenegro – Far Cry 3<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

“Did I ever tell you what the definition of insanity is?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These 11 words set the tone for one of gaming’s most iconic villains, and arguably one of the greatest games of all time. Far Cry 3<\/em>‘s most beloved antagonist, Vaas Montenegro, is a force to be reckoned with. As leader of the Rook Islands’ most notorious band of pirates, he knows how to control a dangerous gang of unhinged killers and use them to get whatever he wants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately for the player, Vaas wants them<\/em> and as he pursues protagonist Jason Brody across the islands for half the game, the player quickly realizes just how crazy Vaas can be. The aforementioned speech – dubbed “The Insanity Monologue” by the game’s wiki – perfectly paints the brutal picture that led to Vaas’ psychopathy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you’re escaping Vaas’ compound after being captured for ransom money or falling into a trance after being stabbed in the chest – after<\/em> being shot point blank in the chest, mind you – the sheer amount of chaos that Vaas brings with him is undeniable. It’s almost as if he derives pleasure from his destructive actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vaas isn’t just adored for being one of the most batshit wild boys of Far Cry <\/em>history, he is also portrayed effortlessly by Breaking Bad’s<\/em> Michael Mando. A great villain, to me, is believable by the way the character is played. That’s why I love Mads Mikkelsen no matter what<\/em> he does. Mando’s performance here, coupled with his disturbing motives and unwavering confidence, make Vaas my favorite video game baddie of all time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Allan Muir<\/strong> – At Last, I Saw<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kreia – Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n

To say I love Star Wars would be a severe understatement. In the year of 2005 I discovered the sequel to Knights of the Old Republic<\/em> at my local Blockbuster. I was a changed person in regards to how I like my stories to be told. Not only that, it was my first Obsidian game prior to discovering later titles down the line such as Alpha Protocol<\/em>. While there is a treasure trove of villains who are great in nearly every way, Kreia is my favorite villain in all of gaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With KotOR<\/em>, Malak felt like the type of antagonist you’d see in traditional Star Wars media at the time. Kreia still stands as one of the more developed and nuanced characters in Star Wars despite being a villain. This is further detailed as you learn more of Kreia and her past through her students: Nihilus and Sion. The former is in search of energy to avoid death, the latter refuses to succumb to death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The moment in which Kreia strikes caught me off guard and remains one of, if notthe best moments in all of Star Wars. In fact, the entire sequence is masterfully done. So the next time you and a friend are talking about Star Wars villains, don\u2019t be afraid to infodump about this historic character. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
