In this title from developer Pandemic Studios and published by LucasArts, you are the titular Mercenary fighting for the almighty paycheck committing warcrimes. It was my first “podcast game” except for my time with it, it was more of a “radio game”. As I would play the game on my Xbox and listen to WFAN Sports radio in 2004 right after the Yankees committed the biggest choke in sports history against the Boston Red Sox.

The game had no real story to speak of as the whole point of the game was to cause as much death and destruction as possible. In addition this was during the early period of the Iraq war which makes sense as to why a game dealing with this morally gray subject material made it into the game.

The amount of time I poured into this game was astounding and now that I look back upon it, surprising considering how much my game choice has shifted since I was a young child. Having mental issues of my own for a majority of my life, I find myself either relating to these stories or, at the very least, enjoying getting a glimpse into the world of people with similar conditions. While everyone’s mental disorders vary in symptoms and strength, the one constant between them all is the hinderance they have on our everyday lives. I think video games encapsulate that sensation even easier than a film or a song can. Video games are an art form you experience firsthand, and literally playing a character with struggles you don’t always understand provides a unique gameplay hook every time.

Perhaps my favorite example of this genre is a little “indie” title published by Electronic Arts back in 2019 called Sea of Solitude. In this game, you play as Kay, a girl dealing with feelings of extreme loneliness, on a journey to fight her demons and learn how to let go of her past. It’s a thrilling ride as the player takes Kay through multiple locales, all focusing on various mental health struggles like anxiety, detachment, and isolation. It walks a beautifully fine line between relaxing open-world exploration game and uncomfortably disturbing journey into the mind. What this game does with shadows, audio, and world-bending puzzles perfectly feeds into the uneasy tone of its story.

If you’ve never given Sea of Solitude a chance, I strongly suggest you do. I’ve suggested it to my friends for years, as it not only helped me, someone with a mental disorder, but it can also help people without them learn a bit more about them (Hellblade has a similar effect). In 2021, a Director’s Cut edition was released for the Nintendo Switch, though I can’t really recommend that version, as it was published by a rather disreputable studio instead of EA (who is, comparatively, a lot more reputable). It’s just so nice to see a big company like EA take a chance on smaller titles like Sea of Solitude. Even more recent games like Lost in Random, It Takes Two, and Knockout City have had so much breathing room because a massive, established publisher took a chance on them. I think if we cast more focus on AA titles like these, we’ll watch nothing but creativity flow through the industry once more.

Josh Miller – Unravelling the mysteries that all started with the Big Bang

Outer Wilds (8th generation consoles & PC)

I struggled wish this pick for two reasons: 1.) How do I pick a favorite? and 2.) What defines a AA-game? Well, after scouring the Internet for people’s examples of what defines a AA-game, I picked one I saw repeatedly….and a damn good one too. Outer Wilds. A game that I wish I was smarter to play and better with controls. But despite the faults I have that prevented me from beating the game, it was still such a magical and special experience.

There were two professions I dreamed about as a kid that I would have as an adult. One would be President of the USA. The other was astronaut. Im currently writing on this website, so you can wager how those dreams went.

Suffice it to say, video games have had some cases where the magic of being an astronaut just hits right. Outer Wilds is one of those games. From bouncing between planets to discovering mysteries that so much of humanity wishes could be found in their lifetime, Outer Wilds was a dream come true in some respects. Sure, the solar system only exists for about 5 minutes before you are wiped out of existence from a supernova, but that doesn’t deter from the mystery and excitement of traversing the stars.

And it never goes away. From the first second to the closing credits, Outer Wilds is such a remarkable experience. It’s beautiful, yet terrifying. It’s somber, yet tense. It’s small while feeling so incredibly large. Very few games, AA or AAA, have provided an experience for me like this game. So I would be hard pressed to find a better example than Outer Wilds for this roundtable.

What are your favorite Double-A level games?
