Happy holidays from us here at VGU.tv to you all! As we are on the eve of Christmas, we wanted to take a moment to talk about our favorite holiday memories. We hope you share yours as well either in the comments or on the Twitter reply to this article. Josh Miller – Feeling More Old Than Jolly<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

In 2011, after what felt like forever in trying, my wife and I almost gave up. Well, giving up without seeking special help. Then we got the news….she was pregnant. It was a rush of excitement and fear like I hadn’t experienced before. The excitement gave way to wanting to tell everyone, but holding back until we got to a safer point in the pregnancy. While my wife told her family almost immediately at that point, I made mine wait a little longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The image above was the first look we had of our child. Sure it looked like a weird John Carpenter creature of some sort, but by god, it was our John Carpenter creature. So we took the image and inserted it in a picture frame letting them know a Miller was on the way. Christmas came, and my wife and I kept an eye on that gift until my mom opened it. It took a second to register, but when it did, it was an amazing moment to see how happy they were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hadn’t topped that feeling before at Christmas prior, and haven’t since. And that’s ok. It’s a moment that doesn’t come often, and to have it attached to a Christmas makes it that much more special. As someone who is more Grinch than St. Nick during the holidays, it was easily something that made my heart grow several sizes that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

My goodness, I have to follow that? How can you have a better holiday story than that? My favorite holiday memories all involve my family in some way, whether it\u2019s gathering together to go on a fun trip or simply the traditions we uphold each and every year. But one big holiday memory in the realm of gaming would have to be the year I received a Nintendo Wii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing up, I was surrounded by quite a few gaming consoles, all of which belonged to my dad. From the PS1 to the Dreamcast to the PS2, I wasn\u2019t ever allowed to touch them without his supervision, and while I do find myself lucky to have played some great games in my formative years, I never really felt like these games were \u201cmine.\u201d Fast forward to 2006, when I received a gift I never would\u2019ve imagined seeing in front of the television: a real, genuine Wii just for me!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s one of those visions that\u2019s engrained in your brain, and when I close my eyes I can always picture the Wii sitting there on the floor by the front door of our extremely tiny apartment, and on top of it sat a copy of Happy Feet<\/em>; the first real game I could call my own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019d seen the Wii before at my aunt and uncle\u2019s house, in fact, I think I stood in line at launch to get one with them! I\u2019d also tried out some games back when Six Flags had Wii stations you could play new games on. But actually having a game console in my possession that I could use whenever I wanted\u2026 that was something truly special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wii became my baby and I still have that launch Wii plugged in to this day! Happy Feet <\/em>may have made its way to the bottom of a Rubbermaid tub in my attic, but the memories still live on in my heart, and I long for the Christmas when I can someday give my own child their own console for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Realizing What the Reason for The Season TRULY Is<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, for the first 18 years of my life, I realized I was very self-absorbed and greedy. All I cared about was getting gifts no matter what they were.  Well, I noticed that over the years I did not really begin to care about whether or not I got the BIGGEST, COOLEST, or most expensive gift. I started to care more about getting gifts for my family and getting my Christmas high: seeing the look on family members\u2019 faces when they realized what I got them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To tie into \u201cRealizing What the Reason for The Season Truly Is\u201d I, need to flashback to Christmas 2019 which was the second Christmas without my brother’s wife and my niece\u2019s mother. I was in a bit of a personal crisis since the start of December 2019 which would lead to my quarter-life Pokemon crisis in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But before Christmas 2019 I thought it would be a no-brainer decision to get my niece a Nintendo Switch. Due to wanting her to not play her Switch at all times, I made sure to get her a Switch Lite which can be agreed to be the version of the Switch you cannot actually dock with a TV. The look on my niece\u2019s face when she opened the Switch Lite and the Switch version of Minecraft I got her will forever be on my mental wall. Ever since then my focus has been less on \u201cWhat Will I Get?\u201d and more on \u201cWhat Can I Get For Someone Else\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Emmett Watkins Jr. – Another Holiday Surprise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I’ve lived through enough Christmas days to have a whole roster of big memories to share. But the memory I share today doesn’t have too much to do with the actual holiday. It’s the story of how my relationship with video games drastically changed over the course of one day, and the game that was responsible for that change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was Christmas 2011. I had a PS3 since 2008 and I was already pretty into games. I played whatever I could get my hands on at the time, which was often just one or two games for my birthday or the holidays and whatever latest releases had demos released for them, back when that was a thing more often. Take this and the fact that the only media I consumed about games was G4 and IGN, and you could probably assume that my taste in games was a bit basic. I played LittleBigPlanet, Warkhawk, and a few other games, but nearly my entire gaming diet of the time was comprised of shooters, action games, and the rare platformer.<\/p>\n\n\n

So, this Christmas morning, I got loads of new games. I got Bioshock 2, I got Borderlands 2, I got Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. I even got a sick Gaming Rocking Chair that I sat in all day playing these games, and rarely sat in afterward. But there was one game I asked for that I had prioritized low on my list, yet received anyway: The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection. I had heard, for years at this point, that Shadow of the Colossus was one of the greatest games of all time, yet I never knew it existed the entire time I was primarily a PS2 player. Well, trailers for the game finally introduced me to the scale of its encounters, so I became interested, but it wasn’t the non-stop action fest I was used to, so I only planned to get to it eventually. But there it was, right there in my hands, so I…put it to the side to play Call of Duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern Warfare 3 was a great time, full of the setpieces and gunplay I’ve come to know and love from the franchise. But this entry was a bit shorter than earlier titles, and it took me only 6 hours to roll credits on its campaign. So, after that and Christmas dinner, I had more time to kill, so I figured I’d see what was up with this strange grey\/green boss rusher. And, God damn, did it hook me. But it hooked me in a way I never really encountered before. It’s indirect storytelling, cryptic design, and grandiose presentation filled my brain with questions that had the potential to be so much more interesting than the answers that I usually received immediately when playing any other game. I played it late into the night that Christmas day, and I really never stopped playing it throughout the rest of my holiday break. I finally beat it right before going back to school, and I was blown away by the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n

This is the moment that I started to discover I had taste beyond hack n slashers and shooters. Shortly after this, I fell in love with more “artsy” video games like Gone Home and Life is Strange. Now today, I’m partially defined by how often I love games with immaculate vibes and obscure narratives. Don’t get me wrong, I still love corny action games like The Club and Prototype 2 as much as I love Virginia and Nier Automata. But my time with Team Ico’s sophomore effort really did end up becoming one of those defending games of my adolescence, as it went on to define my taste in games as an adult. And honestly, it’s that a better gift than the year headshot simulator that I’ll forget about within a few months?<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
