The two key factions would be the forces of Earth and the Goa’uld, the latter being the primary antagonists of the series for the first eight seasons of Stargate SG-1. With developers Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment at the helm what could go wrong? Why I chose to go on about this game out of the other canceled games out there? I have good reason, I was a regular on the forums in 2009 and had much delight on those forums.

(The Companion ran an excellent article that I will be referencing, so make sure to read it if you want more information on what happened to the game)

The main plot of the game was to be focused on the return of Ra; the villain of the 1994 film that kicked everything off. As with most MMORPG’s, there would have been two sides at the heart of the story. One for, and one opposed to the return of the villainous Goa’uld.

Credit: MMORPG

The game was to be an expansion on much of the lore introduced into the series canon as well as making use of one of the four races that were mentioned in Season 2’s “The Fifth Race”. The four races being the Asgard, the Nox, the Ancients, and The Furling’s. Or in the case of Stargate Worlds’ THE Furling. As CME developer Steve Garvin mentions the Furling being “a single entity that stretches across time, able to see the past and the future, “a single entity that stretches across time, able to see the past and the future,”

Video Credit: YouTube User “01000001011100100111“

The gameplay that was made visible to the public by CME looked very much influenced by what games like World of Warcraft were doing at the time. As the video above shows, there was a sense of “tactically approaching combat”. One of the main things I would see on the CME forums around the time Stargate Universe debuted in Fall 2009 were questions revolving around when the next beta would be. Considering this piece is about canceled games, you know where things are headed now.

After more difficulties discussed in the article, the game was canceled even though the game was “four or five months” away from the beta phase before things went downhill. While something ultimately did come from this whole operation (Stargate: Resistance) the entire situation is one of the biggest “what if’s” in gaming.

Josh Miller – Father

Earthbound 64 (Mother 3) – Nintendo 64

I was late to the Super Nintendo. I was a Genesis kid. But as the SNES was on the way out, I was adamant I get one. And one birthday in the mid-90’s, got one I did. It wasn’t long after though that I was suddenly asking for a Nintendo 64, which never happened due to just getting the SNES. But the blame goes on Nintendo Power #94, because they showcased a game I had to play: EarthBound 64.

Around the time that magazine released, I was becoming obsessed with EarthBound. I didn’t own it, but instead had to reatart it an ungodly amount of times thanks to save files being deleted from the Blockbuster copy. Each time I went though, it was the first game I sought out. IT DID RELEASE! …..

…But as a GBA game reworked from the ground up and it never left Japan. Oof, that hurt.

While no complaint can really be had for the classic that is Mother 3 on the GBA (the sprites alone hold up better than the 64 models would); I still really want to see what EarthBound 64 would have done. While much of what Mother 3 would hit the same story beats, EarthBound 64 was going to be told differently. Instead of 8 chapters over 3 years, it was going to be 12 chapters over 10 years and be a much darker story. We knew certain locations were cut such as The Spectacular Cave and that characters were going to be in the party longer than they were in the final game.

Much of these moments were noted due to the number of magazine spots it received in the original lead-up along with a trailer and playable demo at Nintendo Space World event in 1999. At the time, the game was said to be released in March of 2000, only for it to be cancelled a few months prior to it’s release date.

The game itself was said to be fully playable for the first part of the game and about 60% of the game was completed programming wise. However, the N64 proved more difficult for them to figure out and after originally debating on moving it to the GameCube, decided to instead go with the GBA. However, there are a few copies of the original ROM floating around somewhere though none have surfaced to my knowledge.

EarthBound 64 is such a fascinating game. What was originally planned to be a SNES game would eventually be tossed around multiple Nintendo products only for it to find it’s footing in a GBA release that only one part of the world could legally play. I hope that one day, one of those rare copies of the game find it’s way into the hands of someone willing to showcase it for the world. It would truly be a awesome thing to see.

Graydon Webb – Contrarian American/Card Game Unenthusiast

Phantom Dust Reboot – Xbox One

Credit: Polygon

This choice may seem completely out of left field, but… do you guys remember Phantom Dust? The behind-the-scenes mayhem that occured with Phantom Dust‘s development is just too wild to ignore.

Credit: VG247

It seems that beginning in early 2014, Microsoft suggested a reboot of Phantom Dust, giving it to Darkside Game Studios along with a $5 million budget. Over the course of the next few months, Microsoft would get stingy with their money and overall support, denying any requests for help while adding on to the workload.

By the time E3 came around that year, the publisher had told Darkside to add a single player campaign to this previously multiplayer-exclusive reboot, and while the devs were nearly done with a vertical slice to show Microsoft, Phantom Dust suddenly appeared at E3. Darkside was blindsided by the aforementioned cinematic, and worried it would give the public too much to hope for.

Credit: Eurogamer

In the coming months, Microsoft would continue to deny funds to Darkside, ultimately shuttering the project and forcing the studio to lay everyone off and go out of business. Perhaps the worst thing is that Microsoft still holds onto hope for Phantom Dust to reappear someday. But in the end, this whole thing has put a sour taste in my mouth as well as many other gamers, as we watched a greedy publisher take over a small studio and crush it beneath the weight of extreme pressure and irrational demands.

Personally, I thought Phantom Dust looked awesome when I saw it at E3 2014, and I wondered about where it went for many years. Thankfully, I know now that what I saw was nothing but a pipe dream, and it was never meant to be. Microsoft has made a lot of strange and shitty decisions in its time, but this has to be one of the most selfish and upsetting. So, rest in peace, Phantom Dust. And Darkside Game Studios.

And Scalebound.

With that the first part of this trilogy is at an end.
