Over the past two-three decades we have seen incredible performances in Video Games from actors who bring the words penned by their respective writers to life. It doesn’t take being the lead in a video game to steal the show with a notable performance, just look at different entertainment mediums such as television or film. So, here are our favorite performances in Video Games and who knows, this could be a recurring series…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allan Muir – EiC, Site Admin,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael Wincott (Prophet of Truth in Halo 2<\/em>)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

Michael Wincott is known more by the nerd community for his role as the main antagonist in The Crow<\/em>. He is more known for his role in Jordan Peele’s 2022 film NOPE<\/em>. I first knew of him from a little movie from 1997 called Alien Resurrection<\/em> that I think I have mentioned on a podcast once… anyway, while he has done film work he has shined in the voice roles he has taken in his career. Before his modern resurgence he provided the voice of the Prophet of Truth in 2004’s Halo 2<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wincott managed to capture the essence of what you expected the Covenant hierarchy to come across as. Along with Robin Atkin Downes and Hamilton Camp as the Prophets of Regret and Mercy, Wincott made such an impact with his performance that he is still the favorite when compared to the man who replaced him: Terence Stamp. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That said, Wincott may not be as active in voice roles as Robin Atkin Downes but when he picks a project to participate in, he gets the job done…<\/p>\n\n\n

Josh Miller – Gelatinous Snake<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cameron Clarke (Liquid Snake in Metal Gear Solid<\/em>)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

While David Hayter typically gets all the voice acting praise in Metal Gear Solid<\/em>, one voice actor stood out to me more. Cameron Clarke (also known by his pseudonym James Flinders in the game) put on one hell of a performance to go along with Hayter’s wonderful Solid Snake. While Solid Snake was more gruff, Liquid had an air of sophistication and confidence in the most pompous of ways. Solid Snake was Wolverine to Liquid’s Apocalypse or Mr. Sinister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between how he was written and the performance given by Clarke, Liquid Snake became one of my favorite villains. His smugness and intelligence stood out due to his determination in proving he was superior to Solid while throwing anyone under the bus when their usefulness was over. Clarke highlighted all of these characteristics with the acting. Liquid felt like an over-the-top villain without coming off as inept and a joke. Contrast that with the more gravelly voicework from Hayter and the two played off each other so well throughout the games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To this day, the rivalry between Liquid and Solid is still one of the best in gaming. Yes, a good amount of that is from the writing. However, so much of that writing shines through because of the performances given as well. And as much acknowledgement that Hayter receives, its equally important that Clarke gets his credit as well. His role is fun and memorable without detracting from how vile and sadistic Liquid can be. Liquid Snake is bar-none one of the greatest villains in video games. Cameron Clarke just makes him even better.<\/p>\n\n\n

Graydon Webb – VO Hero<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roger Clark (Arthur Morgan in <\/strong>Red Dead Redemption 2<\/em><\/strong>)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I just want to start by saying, “Allan, this is an incredible idea for a series!” There are so many amazing voice actors to choose from, and the way they’ve brought games to life… I would argue some games transcended into masterpieces because <\/em>of certain standout voiceover performances! So yes, we will certainly do more of these, if only to satisfy my hunger for shining the spotlight on anyone who deserves it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We begin, this time around, with a man named Roger Clark. This Irish American cowboy got his start narrating for various short films, as well as landing some roles in television. However, his big break came in 2018 when Rockstar put him in charge of Arthur Morgan, the misunderstood protagonist of Red Dead Redemption 2<\/em>. There’s no denying that however one played the man – passive and unforgiving or steadfast and loyal – Arthur Morgan cemented himself almost instantly amongst the pantheon of fantastic video game characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The emotional, and physical, struggles of Arthur Morgan lay the groundwork for Red Dead Redemption 2<\/em>‘s award-winning narrative. For years now, I have heard countless folks talking about the game’s characters, and how their performances made every decision, side mission, and shootout more impactful. What Roger Clark brings to this role is the vast range of aforementioned emotion, wherein Arthur’s victories and shortcomings are conveyed through the subtlest shifts in his tone. You fall in love with this character over the course of many <\/em>hours, and he begins to feel – in typical Rockstar fashion – like less of a “video game character,” and more of a cinematic hero we’re simply witnessing on the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roger Clark hasn’t done much in the years following. One of his last outings, as protagonist Jack Leary in 2023’s Fort Solis<\/em>, was… okay. Certainly not as impactful as Arthur; I felt he couldn’t decide which accent he wanted to use, making for a rather disjointed performance. Sadly, this tends to keep you feeling more detached from the character you’re playing. I hope Clark has more chances soon to get back in the recording booth, though, as there was something truly special happening in Red Dead 2<\/em>. Twas a magic that will definitely be hard to recapture in future games, and a performance that will forever go down in history as one of the best.<\/p>\n\n\n
