What I can say is that I have not been this excited about a Civ game since Civ 5 about fifteen years ago. Despite owning the most recent releases in the series (Civ V, VI, Beyond Earth), I was not able to stay engaged with VI and Beyond Earth as the vast backlog of comics, manga, books, movies, anime, and video games have been… draining on my ability to do much of anything consistently lately.

Even when factoring in Civ VI I was always interested in the concept of things such as rising sea levels, disasters, diseases, etc. When I was playing Civ VI recently I did not do so well when playing as Rome in a scenario dealing with the dark ages. Despite not doing well in that playthrough it did the job as I wanted to keep putting in more time. The Outer Worlds was not only an extremely enjoyable game but a smaller-scale RPG which I really could use more of these days.

As with Lost Records, I have not looked at much, if any, of the trailers, screenshots, or anything that could give any expectations that could affect my perception of the game. Ironically, the Fallout TV series has had me thinking about The Outer Worlds more and more with the themes and views of that first season.

5. It wasn’t until signing up for Fallout 1st that made me really enjoy/appreciate the game and more importantly, the player community. I have been playing the game in one capacity or another since the beta back in 2018. While I can see where criticism can be made toward the implementation of NPCs into the game, altering the tone of what the game had up until the Wastelanders update allowed it to gain a new identity.

Despite the various theories about Fallout 76’s place in the canon of the series, a lot of the stories I’ve discovered within the game have been far more interesting than what I found in Fallout 4. His beef with Drake took over not just hip hop, music, but all of pop culture for the first half of the past year. He showed to everyone, especially casual and non rap fans, that the genre has a rich culture around it, and that culture is never worth sacrificing for mainstream popularity. Drake was the biggest symbol of someone selling out the culture for the embrace of the mainstream, so Kendrick did that culture a solid by making sure he was dead and buried, musically of course. And to add insult to injury, the release of GNX near the end of the year served as the final blow to Drakes ego, as it’s been Kendricks most successful album of his career so far, with the exception to DAMN.

Aubrey’s body has been cold for ages now, but that doesn’t mean Kendirck is planning to end his momentum. He’s set to perform at the Super Bowl this year, which would make him the first-ever solo rap performer at the Super Bowl. Even Dr. Dre was supported by Eminem, Mary J. Blage, and Kendrick when he previously performed. I’ll be glad to see him take the biggest stage in American entertainment, but I’ll be even more excited to see him during his following Grand National Tour, as I was gifted tickets last year as a 30th birthday gift! 2025 is looking to be another great year to be a Kendrick fan, as there is even heavy speculation that another album is soon on the way as well. Album or no album, however, the West Coast victory lap will continue for quite some time, and it will be just as fun to witness as it was in 2024.

7. Okay, I’m kidding of course, but there is a significant crowd that prefers the franchise’s reboot despite all of the added depth, features, and refinement of Eternal. On one hand, I agree with those folks, as I loved the reboot enough to platinum it, and put in dozens of hours into the multiplayer mode. But on the other hand, Eternal’s added difficulty by way of resource management makes the gameplay so much more engaging and rewarding, and the added focus on platforming embraces the old school roots of the series in a fun, new way. But, later this year, we will find out where id Software themselves sit on this debate, as the follow up, Doom: The Dark Ages, will release in 2025.

The reveal trailer shows a medieval setting full of the fast paced, run and gun action we all love. But it also seems that they’ve added both new weapons and new mechanics. There’s a wide-spread machine gun like weapon that grinds skulls into projectiles, a chainsaw shield to boomerang through hordes, and an iron flail to bash enemies with. But there also seems to be an added ground pound and even a parry system. This shift to more melee based moves is vastly interesting to me, as well as the mech sections and dragon flying sequences that were also shown. I don’t quite understand how it all comes together, nor do I know if the design of the game will lean into Eternal’s challenge or 2016’s more casual vibe. But either way, I will be there day one to see what The Dark Ages will hold for me.

8. That has sort of been the case when it comes to games, but I can’t claim this much anymore when it comes to movies. Looking back to my Letterboxd stats for 2024, I barely watched anything but the latest blockbuster or trendy art flick all year. But, back when I was more adventurous with my movies, I took a chance on what was a reach for me but was a massive hit with film critics: Parasite. That movie was so incredible, so expertly made, that I knew I would follow Bong Joon-ho, the director, down any path he would take in the future. Mickey 17 is that path, and it’s a weird one.

Robert Pattinson, whom I fell in love with during Good Time, stars as Mickey, an Expendable who dies various SciFi deaths only to be reborn for the sake of scientific research. But one day, one of these clones falls into bed to discover that they didn’t replace their prior self, but that their prior self is very much so still alive. This insane narrative hook, paired with the incredible Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collete, makes for a movie I am absolutely excited to make my entire personality as soon as I watch it later this year.

9. That game was an absolute delight. It took the combat depth of modern Assassin’s Creed and the world design of Breath of the Wild and blended them a package with more visual fidelity and smoother gameplay than the Nintendo Switch could have muster. I never beat the game, but I loved my time with it so much that it broke my heart to see it’s follow-up canceled a few years later. It seems that original IPs with vibrant worlds and Zelda-inspired just aren’t as marketable to wider audiences nowadays. Well, maybe that is not the case, at least if Eternal Strands has anything to say about it.

This new IP from Yellow Brick Games not only carries forward the vibrant world of Breath of the Wild but also the physics-based gameplay of that title. You can use elememtnal combinations to burn, freeze, and throw around enemies, similar to the elemental combos you could use in the Switch era Zelda games. But on top of that, bosses in the game are massive and encourage you to climb onto them, similar to Shadow of the Colossus. Sure, the artstyle looks like it’s pulled straight outta Immortals, but the combination of elements from some of the greatest games of all time, and some of my personal favorites, means that this game has massive potential. However, this is still a new game from a new studio, so I pray they can match expectations and deliver something great.

10. Putting that together with this may seem…out of place. Well, I started college back in 2013, but I’m slated to finally finish my degree either late this year, or early the following depending on class availability. It has taken me a long time to get here, and while I have some blame for that, there are some external factors at play as well. On my part, school always came easy for me, but the older I got, the more I questioned the value of education when I knew so many, especially in games journalism, just work hard independently and establish themselves without spending tens of thousands of dollars. So, I started to become disillusioned with higher education overall, and Covid coming right as I had these doubts really made dropping out make the most sense it ever could.

But during those few years off, I realized that I need a plan beyond that. I was working at a grocery store, and was becoming more of a pillar within that store, but left after several years for a higher paying warehouse gig. I moved up from that low-level, very laborious position into working in the office after a few months, but even then I realized I didn’t want to play the middle-management game for the rest of my life, even though the benefits and pay at this new job is pretty good. Right now, I don’t feel fulfilled at my job, and while I’m fine with that, and even exsected, that to be the case as I age, I can’t let that be the case if I’m working there for 10-12 hours a day, or upwards of 14 when covering for a coworker. To squeeze writing, gaming, friends, family, sleep, and all my other loves and passions into that dwindlingly small window of time away from work is incredibly hard to do. The only way I can see out of that is through education, so, with motivation from someone close to me at the time, I went back to school at the top of 2024.

The last year of school has had just as many ups and downs as they did before I took my years-long break, and mostly for reasons outside of the school itself. But the difference is, despite how much the road has changed since I turned onto it, I can actually see the destination now. It’s still blury, but I’m beginning to recognize the shape of my future for the first time since the pandemic, if not my entire adult life. So, yes, I’ve been destracted and unmotivated throughout many college careers, and the world burning all around me the last decade hasnt’ helped. But I really feel like I can get out of this chapter of my life at least, and begin a new one. The old me has to die for the new me to be born, and while I will always be nervous about bulling the trigger, I’m starting to belive that I will actually spit out the bullet in the end. Now, if anyone has any summer internships, hit me up!

Graydon Webb – The Contrarian American

11. I came away from Wicked: Part One with a smile on my face and hope in my heart that perhaps not every movie musical is as doomed as critics like to say.

For these reasons, I’m expecting Wicked: For Good to keep that bar held high, delivering higher-quality performances of both classic showtimes and new songs alike (as the composer has promised). Thankfully, it won’t be easy to drop a ball such as this, not when everything is already so… thrillifying!

13. Every year, I bust out the list of currently running shows (on and off-Broadway), upcoming shows, and tours kicking off soon. In 2025, there are quite a few I hope to get to, including Sunset Boulevard before it inevitably closes and the new production of Pirates of Penzance starring Ramin Karimloo and David Hyde Pierce.

But my most anticipated show is Operation Mincemeat, making its North American debut straight from dominating the West End. I’ll admit I don’t know much about this musical, but the fact someone compared it to Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 – one of my absolute favorites – has me incredibly excited. I looked into the story recently, and it seems to follow a real-life event in which the Allies of WWII sneakily threw the Germans off their scent, using a dead body as a trap.

How does this make for an enjoyable, even humorous musical, you might ask? It’s just so hard to live life alongside a band as epic and talented as these fellas and not plan your year around them! Unfortunately, I do not life in the UK, where the majority of Bastille’s goings-on occur. I tend to miss out on smaller tours and record store signings. In 2024, I completely missed out on any promo for their latest album, Ampersand, as all of it was either England-based or spread across four shows in America that sold out within seconds.

All in all, it’s rough to be a non-European Bastille fan. But 2025 is my year, and I can feel it! Following along with their historical pattern, Bastille tends to release a new album every three years or so. Naturally, that means something new is on the horizon, and I can’t wait to see what they’ve been cooking! The aforementioned Ampersand was more of a solo passion project from lead singer Dan Smith, so it’s time to get the whole band back in the studio, make some new tunes, and get out on the road again!

Mark my words, Bastille’s triumphant return to the United States shall usher in a VIP experience that includes Graydon Webb this time around. A hero who could juggle the planets of this solar system (depending on the iteration) but instead chooses to help people. His acts of kindness and altruism are things that the world needs more of, and this planet would be better if people modeled their actions more off of him. Unfortunately, he hasn’t always been portrayed as such, and I’m hoping the new James Gunn film rectifies thatfor a large audience and sets in stone just how great of a character he can be.

Not much is known about the film currently, so it’s hard to speculate anything about it really. However, James Gunn seems to have a good knack on heroes and I’m interested to see his take on Superman. Superman has a sense of humor. He loves to smile. But he doesn’t mind getting physical if need be. There are so many attributes of the character I can see that will excel with Gunn behind the charge of the movie, and I’m hoping it shines through when the movie releases.

If anything, maybe people will finally understand he isn’t as boring as they want to believe him to be. There’s a reason he has been around as long as he has with, essentially, no real breaks. He is a relatable character no matter what era. It’s just a matter of finding the right people to show it properly. I have faith that James Gunn will do just that.

17. One of the first Halloween outfits I can recall was a Macho Man Randy Savage one back when I was…I dunno….five years old? As the years passed though, I fell away even though the interest was brewing beneath the surface. But asking to pay more for a product I hadn’t truly followed for a while was a tough pill to swallow. Then, Netflix came into the equation.

Having a place I’m already subscribed (thanks T-Mobile!) to watch some wrasslin’ is going to be so nice. Especially having kids interested in the show too. I might actually try and make it a ritual for them like it was for me growing up. Except instead of Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart it’ll be Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. And maybe, just maybe, see John Cena retire in realtime.

I had a lot of great memories with the WWE (then WWF). Having it as an option on Netflix is a gamechanger for me and gives me the opportunity to give similar memories to my children. Then maybe one day in the future, they’ll attend their first WWE show like a RAW or Smackdown.

18. But there are plenty of games I do want to play that are currently out and ones I’m sure will be coming out. But I just can’t tolerate the current Switch any longer. It’s age is showing and no game release on it can seemingly shy away from performance discussion.

I need a new one. Nintendo needs a new one. And like the last one, I’m sure it’ll sell like hotcakes. So like Fry from Futurama once said, “Shut up and take my money!”

19. More often than not, it’s Universal Studios because my kids like the rides over Disney and….let’s face it…..is much cheaper of the two. Usually I dread it, but with the opening of Epic Universe, I am eager to go. Yes, the Universal Monsters section will definitely be a highlight, but I’m more excited for Super Nintendo World. So are my kids.

I feel giddy thinking about being surrounded by a series I’ve loved since I was a child. The landscapes, the characters, and just the general vibe have me excited to visit. We are talking about going in 2025 and doing a stay at the new hotel there at Epic Universe, but we still have to wait to iron out the kinks there. Regardless, going to Orlando again, after not going in 2024, will be nice, but even better with having something fresh to experience.

Normally when we go, it’s also just for a mental retreat of sorts. In 2025, it’ll be for the same reason but also for a much larger reason. 2024 was hard for a number of reasons, but one in particular hit the hardest. And because of that, Universal will be treated as a congratulatory reward of sorts. Which leads me to the fifth thing I’m most excited to see in 2025.

20. She found two lumps herself (check yourselves out, it actually can save your life) and upon further inspection had it lymph nodes as well. It was caught early, but despite all that, it got expensive real quick and took over the back half of 2024 with doctor visits, employment work-arounds, and chemo treatments.

It has sucked. Yes, everything seems to be going smoothly so far at the time of me writing this (December 1st), but it has had its complications. Telling my kids we have to cancel our trip they were looking forward to sucked. And it was made worse by explaining to them why we had to cancel it. Telling them mommy was getting special treatment for a life-threatening disease is not something she thought she would do at the age of 35. It hurts seeing her lose her hair she loved so much and having the chemo days where she feels like complete garbage. Ideally, not every Thursday after chemo will result in her passing out in my arms and rushing her to the ER.

Suffice it to say, things have been better. But it’s also been great to see the support that we have from friends and (some) family. We have cried or been on the verge of crying not just from the bad news, but all the help everyone has offered us since the diagnosis too. Easily the toughest challenge we’ve faced yet, and we feel comfort in knowing the people behind us are truly behind us.

This is without a doubt what I look forward to the most. My wife ringing that bell announcing to everyone there she successfully made it through. I have no doubt she will. We have been together since 2007. She is my best friend. I owe the world to her. And I know how tough and stubborn she can be. It won’t be easy and lots of changes will come from this not just from chemo but the surgery and radiation as well. But I’ll be by her side every step of the way. And I’ll be so incredibly proud of her when she grabs that rope and let’s everyone know that another person kicked cancer’s ass.

2024 may not have been the best of the decade so far, but now at this halfway point, we’re ready to look to the future!
