Credit: Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment and Player First Games A few years ago, VGU member Emmett Watkins Jr. took it upon himself to do something we hadn’t done before or since. He started the PlayStation All-Star Ultimate Roster Showdown. Well now a new platform-fighter has been released (at least in open beta at the time of this writing) in the Warner Brothers published title Multiversus. So I thought, let’s do it again. It was fun, engaging, and a great way to bring our friends into the fold as well through pitching their picks or voting. Multiversus may or may not have legs. If Steam numbers are anything to go off of though, it may be around for a while. The fact that it’s free-to-play will certainly give it an edge on keeping the player count up. Not only does it seem to be a solid platform-fighting game, but the roster is one that people can easily become invested in. This is where this showdown comes in…find more characters to get people invested. So below is my attempt at thievery as I pull Emmett’s post from a few years ago and make some modifications to it in an effort to fit the differences this go around. If this sounds intriguing to you, please check out how things will play out below. Credit: Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment and Player First Games Here’s how this will work: Each Friday throughout the rest of the year (give or take), you will see two things. On our official Twitter account, @VGU_TV, we will put out a Twitter poll in which two characters will be pitted against each other. Throughout the week, you all will be able to vote on which character you feel most deserves a spot on the roster. Once the next Friday hits, that poll will close in favor of a new poll, and we’ll do this all over again. This will begin on August 26th. If everything runs smoothly, we should have it done before our Game of the Year content starts rolling out in January. Now, alongside those Twitter polls, you’ll also see a new article here on the site! In that article, you’ll see two of our (or maybe even guest!) writers make their case for each of the characters! For those unacquainted with a character, or just need to be swayed toward one, these articles will also have the Twitter poll embedded into them, so you can vote immediately after reading. Breaking up some of these polls, we may do something special where a roundtable or lists are done detailing other things we want to see. Maybe one week we focus on different skin alternatives for characters. Another week may have us touch on stages we want to see. Who knows, perhaps some other ideas come up between now and then. In the end, we’ll do one massive podcast where we’ll discuss everything. Our winners, our losers, general thoughts on the game and potential improvements – anything and everything! If you need an idea of what I’m talking about here, check out our podcast wrapping up the previous roster showdown. Credit: Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment and Player First Games Sounds cool, right? But wait! We will not be starting from scratch. The game currently has 17 characters to choose from, two announced to be coming in the future, and a number that has been datamined/leaked (which we will just assume to be true). So between all of these characters, there are up to 42 roster spots already filled. That’s a lot already. We will not be doing 20 weeks of character picks. Instead, I’m going to shoot for slightly less at 18. This will put us at an even and round 60 character slots. Any character that has been associated with WB in the past is up for grabs. This is just for fun, so any hypotheticals (no matter how impossible they may be), are on the table. As for the spots already filled, here is who we currently know is on the roster or hinted to be on a future roster: Announced Characters: Arya Stark (Game of Thrones)Batman (DC Comics)Bugs Bunny (Looney Tunes)Finn (Adventure Time)Garnet (Steven Universe)Harley Quinn (DC Comics)The Iron Giant (The Iron Giant)Jake (Adventure Time)LeBron James (NBA, Space Jam: A New Legacy)Reindog (Multiversus Original Character)Shaggy (Scooby-Doo)Steven Universe (Steven Universe)Superman (DC Comics)Taz (Looney Tunes)Tom and Jerry (Tom and Jerry)Velma (Scooby-Doo)Wonder Woman (DC Comics)Rick Sanchez (Rick and Morty)Morty Smith (Rick and Morty) And the “datamined/leaked” characters: The Joker (DC Comics)Daenerys Targaryen (Game of Thrones)Fred Flintstone (The Flintstones)Gandalf (Lord of the Rings)Legolas (Lord of the Rings)Wicked Witch of the West (The Wizard of Oz)Godzilla (Godzilla)Harry Potter (Harry Potter)Ron Weasley (Harry Potter)Raven (DC Comics)Max Rockatansky (Mad Max)Marvin the Martian (Looney Tunes)Scorpion (Mortal Kombat)Sub Zero (Mortal Kombat)Nubia (DC Comics)Johnny Bravo (Johnny Bravo)King Kong (King Kong)Neo (The Matrix)Gizmo (Gremlins)Emmet (LEGO Movie)Samurai Jack (Samurai Jack)Ted Lasso (Ted Lasso)The Powerpuff Girls (The Powerpuff Girls) And that’s about it!
