Round 1: Graydon Webb on behalf of Gabriel Logan from Syphon Filter

Hands-down my favorite series from the PSP era was Syphon Filter. Though originally on the PlayStation 1, I never had the chance to play these games as a kid. Looking back on it, though, I probably wouldn’t have wanted to due to its terrible control scheme. But by the time the PSP games Dark Mirror and Logan’s Shadow came around, everything had been gussied up, from the controls to the graphics to the spectacular narrative that kept me playing it over and over again.

As soon as this PlayStation All-Stars 2 idea was thought up at LosHarrow, I knew instantly who my first choice would be. Gabe Logan is a video game hero of mine. He’s like a more sympathetic Snake, with feelings and emotional concern for those around him. Also, he fights with a taser than can literally ignite people. If that’s not badass, then I truly have no idea what badass is.

His choice weaponry includes a 9mm handgun, a sniper rifle, and a gas grenade, among others. Logan also fights with night vision goggles and heat vision goggles, which could be utilized as a special power in some way. On top of this, Gabe Logan is a trained hand-to-hand combat expert, being a super spy and all. His fighting techniques would be a mix of martial arts and gunplay, not unlike Snake in Super Smash Bros.

I was saddened that Gabe Logan wasn’t in the original PlayStation All-Stars. Being a huge part of my PlayStation journey, the PSP games got me through many a car ride, and the emotions it hit me with never failed to affect me, even after a dozen playthroughs. Logan is a super cool character, and the rest of Syphon Filter‘s cast is just as memorable, from Mara Aramov to Lian Xing. Perhaps they could be used in some way as well?

I feel Gabriel Logan is a solid choice for any battle of PlayStation icons, especially since Nintendo took arguably the most prominent stealthy action hero PlayStation has to offer. Shining the spotlight on Syphon Filter wouldn’t be a bad idea, either, as the series has been dormant for far too long. This may be the wake-up call Sony Bend needs, after Days Gone, to get back to work on this awesome stealth franchise.

Round 2: Josh Miller on behalf of Aya Brea from Parasite Eve

I’m not going to lie, I very much dislike characters in fighting games that mainly use projectiles. I’ve always been a melee type of person. Which is why I understand I’m a hypocrite when I suggest Aya Brea from Parasite Eve.

Parasite Eve was a PlayStation exclusive title and one of the best games on the original PlayStation. Since its release, it has grown in popularity despite the sequels becoming increasingly worse, especially for the main character Aya. With that said, despite what would eventually happen with the character, Aya Brea is a strong female protagonist and would be a welcome addition to this PlayStation All-Star Battle Royale (PSASBR) roster.

As I mentioned, I’m not a fan of fighters with projectile weapons. While Aya does have a club at her disposal in the first game and a tonfa in the second; the majority of her weapon use comes in a variety of firearms. I think either the club or tonfa would be a good regular attack, and depending on the button combinations, she could use pistols, shotguns, assault rifles, or whatever.

When it comes to the super moves, Aya could rely on the parasite energy from the games that would release special powers. For instance, the first special could be “energy shot” from the first game sending out a forward blast eliminating anything in the way. The second could be something like “plasma” from the second game which is more of an area directly surrounding her. Lastly for the final super would be her “liberation form” where she morphs into a creature and would be more apt to attack everyone regardless of position on the stage.

Aya would be another great character to this potential PSASBR crew, and even better, another case of female representation and a solid one at that. She has a number of weapons at her disposal for attacks along with plenty of powers to choose from to use as super moves. For these reasons, I think Aya Brea from Parasite Eve would be an amazing addition to this roster.
