Almost a full month before the Ubisoft Forward event, Google Stadia has accidentally allowed an early in-development version of Gods and Monsters to be publically playable to users. Before quickly being taken down, this mishap resulted in a number of gameplay clips appearing all over Reddit and Twitter, including an extended video sent to us by an anonymous Stadia user. The gameplay provided to us which, again, is early in development footage and also has no audio, gives us a small glimpse into the game that goes a bit deeper than the CGI trailer we got at the game’s reveal. While this footage is very early, and things could change drastically before Ubisoft officially reveals gameplay for the game, there are a few things we can gather from these few minutes.

The game seems to pull heavily from both Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series, specifically Origins and Odyssey, and Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

The combat animations, camera angles when talking to NPCs, and the compass at the top of the screen all look very similar to those found in Assassin’s Creed Origins and Odyssey. In fact, most of the user interface looks similar to those in modern AC games, down to the font choice for the location titles and the quest screen.

As for the Breath of the Wild inspiration, there is a stamina meter when climbing, which was a defining feature of Breath of the Wild. There is also a “binoculars” mode that allows the player to look into distant locations form afar, and similar to Breath of the Wild, the player is given a number of pins to place on the map at their leisure. This seems to be a move to encourage more organic exploration, but we can’t know until the game officially releases.

Ubisoft is likely going to reveal this game fully in it’s upcoming “Ubisoft Forward” event, which is scheduled for July 12th. Seeing that Gods & Monsters is slated to come out this fiscal year, we are all expecting to see more about the game there, as well as other Ubisoft titles like Watch Dogs: Legion and Rainbow Six: Quarantine (although the latter two might be reworked due to current events).
