Hozier – “Almost (Sweet Music)”

God, I love this idea. I love hearing everyone’s stories! I love seeing how music shapes us all and how every song holds a unique meaning for every person on Earth. What an incredible medium. I would be nothing, if not for music. I can think of songs that hyped me up for big events, I can think of songs that held me tight while I was down. There’s something for everyone in the world of music, and something for every emotion.
Today, I bring to the table the emotion of love. I think it’s safe to say nearly everyone in a couple has “their song.” It’s such a phenomenon that Taylor Swift wrote a song about having a song! My girlfriend and I have had a song ever since we met: “Almost (Sweet Music)” by Hozier. Her favorite musician is the Irish folk singer Hozier, and after listening to his entire discography to learn more about her, this song really resonated with me. I soon deemed it “ours” and ever since, it brings images of her smile to the forefront of my mind every time I hear this melody.
Something about the fun jumpiness of the guitar notes coupled with the soothing vocalizations of the backing chorus really makes me want to get up and dance. It’s one of Hozier’s more upbeat songs – straying from a catalog of rather slow, semi-depressing ballads – and it really speaks to the concept of being in love and enjoying life with the person you’re bound to. “Almost” brings back the feeling of our first meeting, and it grounds me in the reality of sensing deep emotion for everything I have in life. Three years in and I’m still moved by this tune; I don’t see that feeling changing anytime soon.
