As 2023 draws to a close, we not only look back at everything this year brought, but look forward to the next year as well. Don’t worry though, nobody is looking forward to the 2024 Presidential Election. However, there are plenty of amazing things to be excited for in 2024. So the crew here at VGU wanted to take a moment to highlight what we are eager to see in the upcoming year.
We will be breaking this out into four parts, each with six items by different members of VGU. Let’s kick off our 24 for ’24 list with Josh’s most anticipated things for 2024.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

It should come as no surprise that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is on this list. Given my love for the game, I can’t help but want more, especially after seeing the trailer for it. I want to see where they go and what changes between this and the original Final Fantasy VII. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: no game has succeeded in making me feel like I’ve played it again for the first time. The same story beats and characters are there to make me feel like I’m playing a remake. But the changes make it feel like a completely new game. So bring on the rebirth!
Terrifier 3

I’m a sucker for horror films. If you look at my yearly watch list, that’s mostly what it consists of. Art the Clown from the Terrifier films (and All Hallows’ Eve) is one of the newest franchise horror antagonists that could go the iconic route with the likes of Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. He is such a personality while being dark and demented and seems unstoppable. Now, I didn’t love Terrifier 2 as much as the first, but I still enjoyed it enough. Now have Art show up at Christmas? That’s some bloody fun I can get behind. More Christmas themed horror movies please!
Jason Aaron on Action Comics

Final Fantasy VII isn’t the only thing I’ve discussed my love for on this site. I’ve even mentioned Superman from time to time. I have loved Superman since I was a kid. So finding new excitement for the comics is always great, and that happened recently after the announcement of changes with Action Comics. For a while now, it has been another long running Superman book. Now, they are changing it a bit to have less long-form stories with more bite sized tales from a rotation of writers. Most specifically, I’m hyped for Jason Aaron finally getting a shot with Big Blue. I’ve enjoyed his time at Marvel, along with his creator-owned stories such as Scalped and Southern Bastards. Him jumping on Superman, even if it’s only for a few issues, is something I am looking forward to reading.
Dragon Ball Daima

FEED ME MORE. Even Ryback doesn’t understand my hunger for more Dragon Ball content. My daily Dokkan Battle only goes so far and the bits and pieces of Dragon Ball Heroes popping up on YouTube to the sporadic movie every few years….nothing has satiated me like Dragon Ball Super did when it was dropping in Japan. Although Dragon Ball Daima isn’t the full blown successor everyone wanted to see, it’s at least SOMETHING. And I’ll take anything Dragon Ball (I even read some of the fanfic stuff recently!) because I love it so much. Nothing quite like it in my opinion.
Persona 3 Reload

Despite owning it, I never got around to playing Persona 3 on my PlayStation Vita. Now, with it seemingly broken, that option is no longer viable. Thankfully, Persona 3 Reload is coming. I fell in love with the most recent Persona games, so getting to experience another one should be a 2024 highlight. This is especially so given what little I know about Persona 3 as the plot of a mysterious dark tower showing up in the city sounds like it’s right up my alley. Regardless, this will be coming out on Game Pass, so it will for sure be a game I play next year. I just hope it won’t take me three months to finish like the most recent games did.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

The original Ghostbusters is one of my favorite movies ever. I went through the toy phase as a kid with my firehouse and Ecto-1. I ate Ghostbusters cereal while drinking Hi-C Ecto Cooler and watching The Real Ghostbusters. It was one of the first movies I would buy as we transitioned to DVD’s, to blu-rays, and now digital. Suffice it to say, the most recent Ghostbusters movie let me down. It’s a franchise that has so much that can be done with it, and instead it was a rehash with less likeable characters in a more bland environment. Thankfully, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire appears to be correcting (at least a couple of) those issues. Maybe it won’t stick the landing, but I liked Afterlife enough to give it a shot. As long as it feels fresh and new, odds are I will love it. I have a feeling my kids will for sure, and it’s great to see them as excited for Ghostbusters like I was when I was their age.
